But as they raised their eyes and looked, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their camels carrying labdanum resin, balsam, and myrrh, on their way to bring them down to Egypt.And Judah said to his brothers,“ What profit is it for us to kill our brother and cover up his blood?Come, and let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers listened to him.

So Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said to himself,“ The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”Now when the words of her elder son Esau were reported to Rebekah, she sent word and called her younger son Jacob, and said to him,“ Behold your brother Esau is consoling himself concerning you by planning to kill you.Now then, my son, obey my voice, and arise, flee to Haran, to my brother Laban!Stay with him a few days, until your brother’s fury subsides,until your brother’s anger against you subsides and he forgets what you did to him. Then I will send word and get you from there. Why should I lose you both in one day?”

When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people replied to the king, saying,“ What share do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse; To your tents, Israel! Now look after your own house, David!” So Israel went away to their tents.

Then King Solomon swore by the Lord, saying,“ May God do so to me and more so, if Adonijah has not spoken this word against his own life!Now then, as the Lord lives, who has established me and set me on the throne of David my father, and has made me a house just as He promised, Adonijah certainly shall be put to death today!”Then King Solomon sent the order by Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he struck him so that he died.

Abijah and his people defeated them with a great slaughter, so that five hundred thousand chosen men of Israel fell slain.
