“ If you indeed obey the LORD your God and are careful to observe all his commandments I am giving you today, the LORD your God will elevate you above all the nations of the earth.All these blessings will come to you in abundance if you obey the LORD your God:You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the field.Your children will be blessed, as well as the produce of your soil, the offspring of your livestock, the calves of your herds, and the lambs of your flocks.Your basket and your mixing bowl will be blessed.You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.The LORD will cause your enemies who attack you to be struck down before you; they will attack you from one direction but flee from you in seven different directions.The LORD will decree blessing for you with respect to your barns and in everything you do– yes, he will bless you in the land he is giving you.The LORD will designate you as his holy people just as he promised you, if you keep his commandments and obey him.Then all the peoples of the earth will see that you belong to the LORD, and they will respect you.The LORD will greatly multiply your children, the offspring of your livestock, and the produce of your soil in the land which he promised your ancestors he would give you.The LORD will open for you his good treasure house, the heavens, to give you rain for the land in its season and to bless all you do; you will lend to many nations but you will not borrow from any.The LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always end up at the top and not at the bottom, if you obey his commandments which I am urging you today to be careful to do.But you must not turn away from all the commandments I am giving you today, to either the right or left, nor pursue other gods and worship them.“ But if you ignore the LORD your God and are not careful to keep all his commandments and statutes I am giving you today, then all these curses will come upon you in full force:You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the field.Your basket and your mixing bowl will be cursed.Your children will be cursed, as well as the produce of your soil, the calves of your herds, and the lambs of your flocks.You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out.“ The LORD will send on you a curse, confusing you and opposing you in everything you undertake until you are destroyed and quickly perish because of the evil of your deeds, in that you have forsaken me.The LORD will plague you with deadly diseases until he has completely removed you from the land you are about to possess.He will afflict you with weakness, fever, inflammation, infection, sword, blight, and mildew; these will attack you until you perish.The sky above your heads will be bronze and the earth beneath you iron.The LORD will make the rain of your land powder and dust; it will come down on you from the sky until you are destroyed.“ The LORD will allow you to be struck down before your enemies; you will attack them from one direction but flee from them in seven directions and will become an object of terror to all the kingdoms of the earth.Your carcasses will be food for every bird of the sky and wild animal of the earth, and there will be no one to chase them off.The LORD will afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors, eczema, and scabies, all of which cannot be healed.The LORD will also subject you to madness, blindness, and confusion of mind.You will feel your way along at noon like the blind person does in darkness and you will not succeed in anything you do; you will be constantly oppressed and continually robbed, with no one to save you.You will be engaged to a woman and another man will rape her. You will build a house but not live in it. You will plant a vineyard but not even begin to use it.Your ox will be slaughtered before your very eyes but you will not eat of it. Your donkey will be stolen from you as you watch and will not be returned to you. Your flock of sheep will be given to your enemies and there will be no one to save you.Your sons and daughters will be given to another people while you look on in vain all day, and you will be powerless to do anything about it.As for the produce of your land and all your labor, a people you do not know will consume it, and you will be nothing but oppressed and crushed for the rest of your lives.You will go insane from seeing all this.The LORD will afflict you in your knees and on your legs with painful, incurable boils– from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.The LORD will force you and your king whom you will appoint over you to go away to a people whom you and your ancestors have not known, and you will serve other gods of wood and stone there.You will become an occasion of horror, a proverb, and an object of ridicule to all the peoples to whom the LORD will drive you.“ You will take much seed to the field but gather little harvest, because locusts will consume it.You will plant vineyards and cultivate them, but you will not drink wine or gather in grapes, because worms will eat them.You will have olive trees throughout your territory but you will not anoint yourself with olive oil, because the olives will drop off the trees while still unripe.You will bear sons and daughters but not keep them, because they will be taken into captivity.Whirring locusts will take over every tree and all the produce of your soil.The foreigners who reside among you will become higher and higher over you and you will become lower and lower.They will lend to you but you will not lend to them; they will become the head and you will become the tail!All these curses will fall on you, pursuing and overtaking you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the LORD your God by keeping his commandments and statutes that he has given you.These curses will be a perpetual sign and wonder with reference to you and your descendants.“ Because you have not served the LORD your God joyfully and wholeheartedly with the abundance of everything you have,instead in hunger, thirst, nakedness, and poverty you will serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you. They will place an iron yoke on your neck until they have destroyed you.The LORD will raise up a distant nation against you, one from the other side of the earth as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand,a nation of stern appearance that will have no regard for the elderly or pity for the young.They will devour the offspring of your livestock and the produce of your soil until you are destroyed. They will not leave you with any grain, new wine, olive oil, calves of your herds, or lambs of your flocks until they have destroyed you.They will besiege all of your villages until all of your high and fortified walls collapse– those in which you put your confidence throughout the land. They will besiege all your villages throughout the land the LORD your God has given you.You will then eat your own offspring, the flesh of the sons and daughters the LORD your God has given you, because of the severity of the siege by which your enemies will constrict you.The man among you who is by nature tender and sensitive will turn against his brother, his beloved wife, and his remaining children.He will withhold from all of them his children’s flesh that he is eating( since there is nothing else left), because of the severity of the siege by which your enemy will constrict you in your villages.Likewise, the most tender and delicate of your women, who would never think of putting even the sole of her foot on the ground because of her daintiness, will turn against her beloved husband, her sons and daughters,and will secretly eat her afterbirth and her newborn children( since she has nothing else), because of the severity of the siege by which your enemy will constrict you in your villages.“ If you refuse to obey all the words of this law, the things written in this scroll, and refuse to fear this glorious and awesome name, the LORD your God,then the LORD will increase your punishments and those of your descendants– great and long-lasting afflictions and severe, enduring illnesses.He will infect you with all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, and they will persistently afflict you.Moreover, the LORD will bring upon you every kind of sickness and plague not mentioned in this scroll of commandments, until you have perished.There will be very few of you left, though at one time you were as numerous as the stars in the sky, because you will have disobeyed the LORD your God.This is what will happen: Just as the LORD delighted to do good for you and make you numerous, he will take delight in destroying and decimating you. You will be uprooted from the land you are about to possess.The LORD will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known, gods of wood and stone.Among those nations you will have no rest nor will there be a place of peaceful rest for the soles of your feet, for there the LORD will give you an anxious heart, failing eyesight, and a spirit of despair.Your life will hang in doubt before you; you will be terrified by night and day and will have no certainty of surviving from one day to the next.In the morning you will say,‘ If only it were evening!’ And in the evening you will say,‘ I wish it were morning!’ because of the things you will fear and the things you will see.Then the LORD will make you return to Egypt by ship, over a route I said to you that you would never see again. There you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”

So be sure to do them, because this will testify of your wise understanding to the people who will learn of all these statutes and say,“ Indeed, this great nation is a very wise people.”In fact, what other great nation has a god so near to them like the LORD our God whenever we call on him?And what other great nation has statutes and ordinances as just as this whole law that I am about to share with you today?

Beware that the heart of no man, woman, clan, or tribe among you turns away from the LORD our God today to pursue and serve the gods of those nations; beware that there is among you no root producing poisonous and bitter fruit.When such a person hears the words of this oath he secretly blesses himself and says,“ I will have peace though I continue to walk with a stubborn spirit.” This will destroy the watered ground with the parched.The LORD will be unwilling to forgive him, and his intense anger will rage against that man; all the curses written in this scroll will fall upon him and the LORD will obliterate his name from memory.The LORD will single him out for judgment from all the tribes of Israel according to all the curses of the covenant written in this scroll of the law.The generation to come– your descendants who will rise up after you, as well as the foreigner who will come from distant places– will see the afflictions of that land and the illnesses that the LORD has brought on it.The whole land will be covered with brimstone, salt, and burning debris; it will not be planted nor will it sprout or produce grass. It will resemble the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD destroyed in his intense anger.Then all the nations will ask,“ Why has the LORD done all this to this land? What is this fierce, heated display of anger all about?”Then people will say,“ Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods they did not know and that he did not permit them to worship.That is why the LORD’s anger erupted against this land, bringing on it all the curses written in this scroll.So the LORD has uprooted them from their land in anger, wrath, and great rage and has deported them to another land, as is clear today.”

“ Go and declare in the hearing of the people of Jerusalem:‘ This is what the LORD says:“ I have fond memories of you, how devoted you were to me in your early years. I remember how you loved me like a new bride; you followed me through the wilderness, through a land that had never been planted.Israel was set apart to the LORD; they were like the first fruits of a harvest to him. All who tried to devour them were punished; disaster came upon them,” says the LORD.’”Now listen to what the Lord has to say, you descendants of Jacob, all you family groups from the nation of Israel.This is what the Lord says:“ What fault could your ancestors have possibly found in me that they strayed so far from me? They paid allegiance to worthless idols, and so became worthless to me.They did not ask:‘ Where is the LORD who delivered us out of Egypt, who brought us through the wilderness, through a land of desert sands and rift valleys, through a land of drought and deep darkness, through a land in which no one travels, and where no one lives?’I brought you into a fertile land so you could enjoy its fruits and its rich bounty. But when you entered my land, you defiled it; you made the land I call my own loathsome to me.Your priests did not ask,‘ Where is the LORD?’ Those responsible for teaching my law did not really know me. Your rulers rebelled against me. Your prophets prophesied in the name of the god Baal. They all worshiped idols that could not help them.“ So, once more I will state my case against you,” says the LORD.“ I will also state it against your children and grandchildren.Go west across the sea to the coasts of Cyprus and see. Send someone east to Kedar and have them look carefully. See if such a thing as this has ever happened:Has a nation ever changed its gods( even though they are not really gods at all)? But my people have exchanged me, their glorious God, for a god that cannot help them at all!Be amazed at this, O heavens! Be shocked and utterly dumbfounded,” says the LORD.“ Do so because my people have committed a double wrong: they have rejected me, the fountain of life-giving water, and they have dug cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns which cannot even hold water.”“ Israel is not a slave, is he? He was not born into slavery, was he? If not, why then is he being carried off?Like lions his enemies roar victoriously over him; they raise their voices in triumph. They have laid his land waste; his cities have been burned down and deserted.Even the soldiers from Memphis and Tahpanhes have cracked your skulls, people of Israel.You have brought all this on yourself, Israel, by deserting the LORD your God when he was leading you along the right path.What good will it do you then to go down to Egypt to seek help from the Egyptians? What good will it do you to go over to Assyria to seek help from the Assyrians?Your own wickedness will bring about your punishment. Your unfaithful acts will bring down discipline on you. Know, then, and realize how utterly harmful it was for you to reject me, the LORD your God, to show no respect for me,” says the Lord GOD who rules over all.“ Indeed, long ago you threw off my authority and refused to be subject to me. You said,‘ I will not serve you.’ Instead, you gave yourself to other gods on every high hill and under every green tree, like a prostitute sprawls out before her lovers.I planted you in the land like a special vine of the very best stock. Why in the world have you turned into something like a wild vine that produces rotten, foul-smelling grapes?You can try to wash away your guilt with a strong detergent. You can use as much soap as you want. But the stain of your guilt is still there for me to see,” says the Lord GOD.“ How can you say,‘ I have not made myself unclean. I have not paid allegiance to the gods called Baal.’ Just look at the way you have behaved in the Valley of Hinnom! Think about the things you have done there! You are like a flighty, young female camel that rushes here and there, crisscrossing its path.You are like a wild female donkey brought up in the wilderness. In her lust she sniffs the wind to get the scent of a male. No one can hold her back when she is in heat. None of the males need wear themselves out chasing after her. At mating time she is easy to find.Do not chase after other gods until your shoes wear out and your throats become dry. But you say,‘ It is useless for you to try and stop me because I love those foreign gods and want to pursue them!’

When Joshua dismissed the people, the Israelites went to their allotted portions of territory, intending to take possession of the land.The people worshiped the LORD throughout Joshua’s lifetime and as long as the elderly men who outlived him remained alive. These men had witnessed all the great things the LORD had done for Israel.Joshua son of Nun, the LORD’s servant, died at the age of one hundred ten.The people buried him in his allotted land in Timnath Heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.That entire generation passed away; a new generation grew up that had not personally experienced the LORD’s presence or seen what he had done for Israel.The Israelites did evil before the LORD by worshiping the Baals.They abandoned the LORD God of their ancestors who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods– the gods of the nations who lived around them. They worshiped them and made the LORD angry.They abandoned the LORD and worshiped Baal and the Ashtars.The LORD was furious with Israel and handed them over to robbers who plundered them. He turned them over to their enemies who lived around them. They could not withstand their enemies’ attacks.

The word of the LORD came to me:“ Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her abominable practicesand say,‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.As for your birth, on the day you were born your umbilical cord was not cut, nor were you washed in water; you were certainly not rubbed down with salt, nor wrapped with blankets.No eye took pity on you to do even one of these things for you to spare you; you were thrown out into the open field because you were detested on the day you were born.“‘ I passed by you and saw you kicking around helplessly in your blood. I said to you as you lay there in your blood,“ Live!” I said to you as you lay there in your blood,“ Live!”I made you plentiful like sprouts in a field; you grew tall and came of age so that you could wear jewelry. Your breasts had formed and your hair had grown, but you were still naked and bare.“‘ Then I passed by you and watched you, noticing that you had reached the age for love. I spread my cloak over you and covered your nakedness. I swore a solemn oath to you and entered into a marriage covenant with you, declares the sovereign LORD, and you became mine.“‘ Then I bathed you in water, washed the blood off you, and anointed you with fragrant oil.I dressed you in embroidered clothing and put fine leather sandals on your feet. I wrapped you with fine linen and covered you with silk.I adorned you with jewelry. I put bracelets on your hands and a necklace around your neck.I put a ring in your nose, earrings on your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.You were adorned with gold and silver, while your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidery. You ate the finest flour, honey, and olive oil. You became extremely beautiful and attained the position of royalty.Your fame spread among the nations because of your beauty; your beauty was perfect because of the splendor which I bestowed on you, declares the sovereign LORD.“‘ But you trusted in your beauty and capitalized on your fame by becoming a prostitute. You offered your sexual favors to every man who passed by so that your beauty became his.You took some of your clothing and made for yourself decorated high places; you engaged in prostitution on them. You went to him to become his.You also took your beautiful jewelry, made of my gold and my silver I had given to you, and made for yourself male images and engaged in prostitution with them.You took your embroidered clothing and used it to cover them; you offered my olive oil and my incense to them.As for my food that I gave you– the fine flour, olive oil, and honey I fed you– you placed it before them as a soothing aroma. That is exactly what happened, declares the sovereign LORD.“‘ You took your sons and your daughters whom you bore to me and you sacrificed them as food for the idols to eat. As if your prostitution not enough,you slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to the idols.And with all your abominable practices and prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth when you were naked and bare, kicking around in your blood.“‘ After all of your evil–“ Woe! Woe to you!” declares the sovereign LORD–you built yourself a chamber and put up a pavilion in every public square.At the head of every street you erected your pavilion and you disgraced your beauty when you spread your legs to every passerby and multiplied your promiscuity.You engaged in prostitution with the Egyptians, your sexually aroused neighbors, multiplying your promiscuity and provoking me to anger.So see here, I have stretched out my hand against you and cut off your rations. I have delivered you into the power of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed by your obscene conduct.You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians because your sexual desires were insatiable; you prostituted yourself with them and yet you were still not satisfied.Then you multiplied your promiscuity to the land of merchants, Babylonia, but you were not satisfied there either.“‘ How sick is your heart, declares the sovereign LORD, when you perform all of these acts, the deeds of a bold prostitute.When you built your chamber at the head of every street and put up your pavilion in every public square, you were not like a prostitute, because you scoffed at payment.“‘ Adulterous wife, who prefers strangers instead of her own husband!All prostitutes receive payment, but instead you give gifts to every one of your lovers. You bribe them to come to you from all around for your sexual favors!You were different from other prostitutes because no one solicited you. When you gave payment and no payment was given to you, you became the opposite!“‘ Therefore O prostitute, hear the word of the LORD:This is what the sovereign LORD says: Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness was uncovered in your prostitution with your lovers, and because of all your detestable idols, and because of the blood of your children you have given to them,therefore, take note: I am about to gather all your lovers whom you enjoyed, both all those you loved and all those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around, and I will expose your nakedness to them, and they will see all your nakedness.I will punish you as an adulteress and murderer deserves. I will avenge your bloody deeds with furious rage.I will give you into their hands and they will destroy your chambers and tear down your pavilions. They will strip you of your clothing and take your beautiful jewelry and leave you naked and bare.They will summon a mob who will stone you and hack you in pieces with their swords.They will burn down your houses and execute judgments on you in front of many women. Thus I will put a stop to your prostitution, and you will no longer give gifts to your clients.I will exhaust my rage on you, and then my fury will turn from you. I will calm down and no longer be angry.“‘ Because you did not remember the days of your youth and have enraged me with all these deeds, I hereby repay you for what you have done, declares the sovereign LORD. Have you not engaged in prostitution on top of all your other abominable practices?“‘ Observe– everyone who quotes proverbs will quote this proverb about you:“ Like mother, like daughter.”You are the daughter of your mother, who detested her husband and her sons, and you are the sister of your sisters who detested their husbands and their sons. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.Your older sister was Samaria, who lived north of you with her daughters, and your younger sister, who lived south of you, was Sodom with her daughters.Have you not copied their behavior and practiced their abominable deeds? In a short time you became even more depraved in all your conduct than they were!As surely as I live, declares the sovereign LORD, your sister Sodom and her daughters never behaved as wickedly as you and your daughters have behaved.“‘ See here– this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters had majesty, abundance of food, and enjoyed carefree ease, but they did not help the poor and needy.They were haughty and practiced abominable deeds before me. Therefore when I saw it I removed them.Samaria has not committed half the sins you have; you have done more abominable deeds than they did. You have made your sisters appear righteous with all the abominable things you have done.So now, bear your disgrace, because you have given your sisters reason to justify their behavior. Because the sins you have committed were more abominable than those of your sisters; they have become more righteous than you. So now, be ashamed and bear the disgrace of making your sisters appear righteous.“‘ I will restore their fortunes, the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters( along with your fortunes among them),so that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all you have done in consoling them.As for your sisters, Sodom and her daughters will be restored to their former status, Samaria and her daughters will be restored to their former status, and you and your daughters will be restored to your former status.In your days of majesty, was not Sodom your sister a byword in your mouth,before your evil was exposed? Now you have become an object of scorn to the daughters of Aram and all those around her and to the daughters of the Philistines– those all around you who despise you.You must bear your punishment for your obscene conduct and your abominable practices, declares the LORD.“‘ For this is what the sovereign LORD says: I will deal with you according to what you have done when you despised your oath by breaking your covenant.Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish a lasting covenant with you.Then you will remember your conduct, and be ashamed when you receive your older and younger sisters. I will give them to you as daughters, but not on account of my covenant with you.I will establish my covenant with you, and then you will know that I am the LORD.Then you will remember, be ashamed, and remain silent when I make atonement for all you have done, declares the sovereign LORD.’”

When Ephraim spoke, there was terror; he was exalted in Israel, but he became guilty by worshiping Baal and died.

The word of the LORD came to me:“ As for you, son of man, are you willing to pronounce judgment, are you willing to pronounce judgment on the bloody city? Then confront her with all her abominable deeds!Then say,‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: O city, who spills blood within herself( which brings on her doom), and who makes herself idols( which results in impurity),you are guilty because of the blood you shed and defiled by the idols you made. You have hastened the day of your doom; the end of your years has come. Therefore I will make you an object of scorn to the nations, an object to be mocked by all lands.Those both near and far from you will mock you, you with your bad reputation, full of turmoil.“‘ See how each of the princes of Israel living within you has used his authority to shed blood.They have treated father and mother with contempt within you; they have oppressed the foreigner among you; they have wronged the orphan and the widow within you.You have despised my holy things and desecrated my Sabbaths!Slanderous men shed blood within you. Those who live within you eat pagan sacrifices on the mountains; they commit obscene acts among you.They have sex with their father’s wife within you; they violate women during their menstrual period within you.One commits an abominable act with his neighbor’s wife; another obscenely defiles his daughter-in-law; another violates his sister– his father’s daughter– within you.They take bribes within you to shed blood. You engage in usury and charge interest; you extort money from your neighbors. You have forgotten me, declares the sovereign LORD.“‘ See, I strike my hands together at the dishonest profit you have made, and at the bloodshed they have done among you.Can your heart endure, or can your hands be strong when I deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will do it!I will scatter you among the nations and disperse you among various countries; I will remove your impurity from you.You will be profaned within yourself in the sight of the nations; then you will know that I am the LORD.’”The word of the LORD came to me:“ Son of man, the house of Israel has become slag to me. All of them are like bronze, tin, iron, and lead in the furnace; they are the worthless slag of silver.Therefore this is what the sovereign LORD says:‘ Because all of you have become slag, look out!– I am about to gather you in the middle of Jerusalem.As silver, bronze, iron, lead, and tin are gathered in a furnace so that the fire can melt them, so I will gather you in my anger and in my rage. I will deposit you there and melt you.I will gather you and blow on you with the fire of my fury, and you will be melted in it.As silver is melted in a furnace, so you will be melted in it, and you will know that I, the LORD, have poured out my anger on you.’”The word of the LORD came to me:
