The plans of the righteous are just, but the advice of the wicked is deceitful.

The plans of godly people are right. But the advice of sinners will lead you the wrong way.

The thoughts of the righteous are just; the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.

We reject all shameful deeds and underhanded methods. We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God. We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this.

So don’t make judgments about anyone ahead of time— before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.

King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem.He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked,“ Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?”“ In Bethlehem in Judea,” they said,“ for this is what the prophet wrote:‘ And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.’”Then Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared.Then he told them,“ Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!”

O Jerusalem, cleanse your heart that you may be saved. How long will you harbor your evil thoughts?

Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts.May the Lord cut off their flattering lips and silence their boastful tongues.

They visit me as if they were my friends, but all the while they gather gossip, and when they leave, they spread it everywhere.All who hate me whisper about me, imagining the worst.

In their blind conceit, they cannot see how wicked they really are.Everything they say is crooked and deceitful. They refuse to act wisely or do good.They lie awake at night, hatching sinful plots. Their actions are never good. They make no attempt to turn from evil.

I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.

O Lord, rescue me from evil people. Protect me from those who are violent,those who plot evil in their hearts and stir up trouble all day long.Their tongues sting like a snake; the venom of a viper drips from their lips. Interlude

Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance.

The godly can look forward to a reward, while the wicked can expect only judgment.

The schemes of a fool are sinful; everyone detests a mocker.
