不識其人而保之、其受害必更大、苟不為此、可宴然而無虞。

為外人作保者、必受害不淺、不好作保者、不好作保者原文作不好擊掌者可平安無事、

Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but whoever refuses to shake hands in pledge is safe.

Whoever promises to pay for what someone else owes will certainly suffer. But a person who doesn’t agree to pay someone else’s bill is safe.
