The Lord is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and he never lets the guilty go unpunished. He displays his power in the whirlwind and the storm. The billowing clouds are the dust beneath his feet.

There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil— for the Jew first and also for the Gentile.

You need not be afraid of sudden disaster or the destruction that comes upon the wicked,for the Lord is your security. He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.

God will sweep them away, both young and old, faster than a pot heats over burning thorns.

Let the bountiful table set before them become a snare and their prosperity become a trap.Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see, and make their bodies shake continually.Pour out your fury on them; consume them with your burning anger.Let their homes become desolate and their tents be deserted.To the one you have punished, they add insult to injury; they add to the pain of those you have hurt.Pile their sins up high, and don’t let them go free.Erase their names from the Book of Life; don’t let them be counted among the righteous.

Then everyone— the kings of the earth, the rulers, the generals, the wealthy, the powerful, and every slave and free person— all hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains.And they cried to the mountains and the rocks,“ Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb.For the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to survive?”

But though they thunder like breakers on a beach, God will silence them, and they will run away. They will flee like chaff scattered by the wind, like a tumbleweed whirling before a storm.

When people are saying,“ Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.

The fears of the wicked will be fulfilled; the hopes of the godly will be granted.When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation.

How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. For there will be disaster in the land and great anger against this people.They will be killed by the sword or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world. And Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the period of the Gentiles comes to an end.“ And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides.People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

“ Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware,like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth.
