Evil people steal land by moving the boundary markers. They steal livestock and put them in their own pastures.They take the orphan’s donkey and demand the widow’s ox as security for a loan.

But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

And the kings of the world who committed adultery with her and enjoyed her great luxury will mourn for her as they see the smoke rising from her charred remains.They will stand at a distance, terrified by her great torment. They will cry out,“ How terrible, how terrible for you, O Babylon, you great city! In a single moment God’s judgment came on you.”The merchants of the world will weep and mourn for her, for there is no one left to buy their goods.She bought great quantities of gold, silver, jewels, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet cloth; things made of fragrant thyine wood, ivory goods, and objects made of expensive wood; and bronze, iron, and marble.She also bought cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, wagons, and bodies— that is, human slaves.“ The fancy things you loved so much are gone,” they cry.“ All your luxuries and splendor are gone forever, never to be yours again.”The merchants who became wealthy by selling her these things will stand at a distance, terrified by her great torment. They will weep and cry out,“ How terrible, how terrible for that great city! She was clothed in finest purple and scarlet linens, decked out with gold and precious stones and pearls!

The future glory of this Temple will be greater than its past glory, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. And in this place I will bring peace. I, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!”

Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money; it robs them of life.

The lion tore up meat for his cubs and strangled prey for his mate. He filled his den with prey, his caverns with his plunder.

He gave justice and help to the poor and needy, and everything went well for him. Isn’t that what it means to know me?” says the Lord.“ But you! You have eyes only for greed and dishonesty! You murder the innocent, oppress the poor, and reign ruthlessly.”

He boasts,“ By my own powerful arm I have done this. With my own shrewd wisdom I planned it. I have broken down the defenses of nations and carried off their treasures. I have knocked down their kings like a bull.I have robbed their nests of riches and gathered up kingdoms as a farmer gathers eggs. No one can even flap a wing against me or utter a peep of protest.”
