耶穌對他說：『手扶着犂、而直向後看的、沒有在上帝國裏能合用的。』

所以我們也如此。我們既有這樣多如密雲的捨生作證人圍繞着我們，就該脫去各樣的拖累、和那容易纏着我們的罪，用堅忍志氣跑那擺在我們前頭的賽程，轉臉注視着信仰上的開創者和完成者耶穌：他為了那擺在他前頭的喜樂，就堅忍着十字架，輕看羞辱，如今已在上帝的右邊坐着呢。

這不是說我已經得着了，或是已經得完全了；我乃是竭力追求，或者可以抓得着我之所以也被基督抓着的。

豈不知在賽場上跑的、人人都跑，卻只有一個得着獎賞麼？所以你們要跑到抓得着。凡參加運動競賽的、諸事都有節制。他們呢、是要得能朽壞的華冠；我們呢、是要得那不能朽壞的。所以我、我這樣奔跑、不是無定向地；我這樣鬥拳、不是打空氣的。我乃是痛打我的身體，驅使它做奴僕，恐怕我宣傳給別人，自己反成了不中用的！

有一件事我曾求過永恆主，我還要尋求：就是儘我一生的日子住在永恆主的殿中，瞻仰永恆主的恩美，在他的殿堂裏求問。

不但如此，為了要得認識我主基督耶穌——這種認識之至寶，我竟將萬事都看做虧損了；為了他，我已經虧損了一切，看做糞土，為要贏得基督，

所以我們應當離開基督開端之道，向前推進到完全長大的程度，不必再立下改悔死行為和信靠上帝等根基：

我這並不是暗指着窮乏說的；論到我嘛、我已經學會了，無論在甚麼景況、無不知足。我也曉得處卑賤，也曉得處富餘：在各事上、無論如何、我都得了祕訣：可以飽足，也可以饑餓；可以富餘，也可以缺乏。靠着那給我能力的、我總有力量應付萬事。

所以我親愛的，你們既時常聽從了，就該敬畏戰兢地作成你們自己的得救；不但像我和你們同在時那樣，就是如今我和你們不同在時、你們也更應當聽從；

這能怎麼樣呢？反正用各樣方法罷，或用掩飾、或用真誠、基督究竟是被傳揚了。在這事上我倒歡喜，並且還要歡喜。因為我知道、藉着你們的祈求、以及耶穌基督的靈之供應，這件事的結果終必使我得救的。按着我熱切的期待和盼望、在任何事上我都不至於羞愧，倒能以十二分放膽的心、或藉着活、或藉着死、總讓基督在我身體上、現今仍和素常一樣、都被尊為大。因為在我看，活着就是基督，死去也是贏得。

但所需要的只有一件。馬利亞已經揀了好的份兒，就是不能被奪去的。』

所以我們從今以後不再按人的肉體認識人了；縱使曾按其肉體認識基督，如今卻不再這樣認識他了。

但親愛的、這一點你們可別忘了：在主看來，一日如千年，千年如一日。

女子啊，你要聽，要看，要傾耳以聽；務要忘掉你本族之民和你父的家；

如今呢、在這些地帶、再沒有可傳之餘地了；又好幾年以來、我就有渴慕之心、想要在往西班牙去的時候到你們那裏去。我是盼望從你們那裏經過時得見你們，先同你們交往，心裏稍得滿足，然後蒙你們送行到那裏去。不過如今我先要往耶路撒冷去、供應聖徒的需要。因為馬其頓和亞該亞樂意湊集一筆團契捐，給在耶路撒冷聖徒中的窮人。他們真是樂意，其實也是欠他們債的。因為你們外國人若在他們猶太人屬靈的事上有分兒，就應該在屬肉身的事上供奉他們。所以我辦完了這事，把這奉獻的果子蓋印封好了、交付他們以後，就要經過你們那裏、往西班牙去。我也知道我找你們去的時候、必帶着基督豐盛之祝福而去的。
