此則予所深信不疑者也。且予對爾懷此感想、允非過情；蓋爾我神交心契、實為一體；故予之縲絏、亦即爾之縲絏；予之護道樹教、爾托主恩、亦與有功焉、

It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me.

It is right for me to feel this way about all of you. I love you with all my heart. I may be held by chains, or I may be standing up for the truth of the good news. Either way, all of you share in God’s grace together with me.

It is right for me to feel this way about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.

吾之言此、並無責備之意。吾前已言之、在吾儕心中、實以爾等為生死之交也。

此以仁愛為懷、知予之護道、有所受命也；彼則不本至誠、徒以基督為號召、而自立門戶、藉欲重貽吾憂於囹圄之中。

雖然、爾等與我共患難、而濟我之急、爾之所為誠善矣。

予之所以身被桎梏、一若匪徒者、惟為斯福音而已。雖然、天主之道、則無人能加以桎梏也。

我乃一長老也、曾目擊基督之受苦蒙難、且於來日將顯之光榮、預有其分焉。吾欲憑此資格、為爾中任長老者進一言。

爾等本身、即為吾儕之薦書、銘諸吾儕之心、而為萬人所閱讀者也。

親愛之同道乎、吾人言雖如此、心中對爾等實懷厚望、深信爾等距救恩實不遠矣。何則、天主不負有心人、對於爾等之工作、爾等之敬愛聖名、供養聖徒、至今未懈、天主必不致忘懷也。

是故同蒙恩召之聖兄弟、盍一諦觀為吾教總宣道使及大司祭之耶穌乎！

蓋吾一日寓此塵宅、即一日有予爾激發之天職；

故望勿以為主作證是羞、亦勿以予之因主被囚為恥。當賴天主之德、毅然與我共為福音而忍辱負重也。

無所不容、無所不信、無所不望、無所不忍。

在基督道中、受割與否、無關宏旨、亦惟興於仁而立於信而已矣。

吾儕恆為爾等致謝天主；祈禱中亦以為念。蓋爾等信而有行、愛而能勞、仰望吾主耶穌基督、確乎不拔、故在天主聖父之前、時切馳思、不能自已、且知我天主寵愛之兄弟、確在蒙簡之列也。具徵吾儕之授爾以福音、不僅以言、且以神力與聖神、實事求是、廓然不疑。吾儕向在爾中服務、爾等固知其為何如人也。

蓋爾皆為光明之子、旦晝之人、非屬於暮夜與黑暗也。

吾之所為、莫非為福音之故；惟如此、始克共承福音所許之惠耳。

應知此乃可喜之事。蓋爾等既得與基督共患難、則於彼光榮顯現之日、必得與之同樂、將不知手之舞之、足之蹈之矣。

千總乃將葆樂逮繫、加以雙鏈。詢為何人、所犯何事。

亦乞為吾儕祈求天主、為我洞開傳道之門、

獄吏既受命、置之內監、加以桎梏。午夜、葆樂西拉祈禱頌詩、讚美天主；群囚側耳而聽。忽地震甚劇、獄基撼動、監門頓啟、囚者鎖鍊自脫。

是故吾以因主被囚之身、剴切勸爾修身砥行、無忝爾之聖召、

不惟自身受垢蒙辱、若優伶之演劇、供眾一粲；即同道中有遭此垢辱者、爾等亦莫不痛苦身受。爾等不惟體恤囹圄中人、即自己產業之被劫奪、亦能逆來順受、且欣然自樂、固知另有盡善盡美、可大可久之嗣業在也。
