But although we suffered earlier and were mistreated in Philippi, as you know, we had the courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of much opposition.

But when her owners saw their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities.When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said,“ These men are throwing our city into confusion. They are Jewsand are advocating customs that are not lawful for us to accept or practice, since we are Romans.”The crowd joined the attack against them, and the magistrates tore the clothes off Paul and Silas and ordered them to be beaten with rods.After they had beaten them severely, they threw them into prison and commanded the jailer to guard them securely.Receiving such orders, he threw them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the rest of the prisoners were listening to them.Suddenly a great earthquake occurred, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. Immediately all the doors flew open, and the bonds of all the prisoners came loose.When the jailer woke up and saw the doors of the prison standing open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, because he assumed the prisoners had escaped.But Paul called out loudly,“ Do not harm yourself, for we are all here!”Calling for lights, the jailer rushed in and fell down trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas.Then he brought them outside and asked,“ Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”They replied,“ Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household.”Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him, along with all those who were in his house.At that hour of the night he took them and washed their wounds; then he and all his family were baptized right away.The jailer brought them into his house and set food before them, and he rejoiced greatly that he had come to believe in God, together with his entire household.At daybreak the magistrates sent their police officers, saying,“ Release those men.”The jailer reported these words to Paul, saying,“ The magistrates have sent orders to release you. So come out now and go in peace.”But Paul said to the police officers,“ They had us beaten in public without a proper trial– even though we are Roman citizens– and they threw us in prison. And now they want to send us away secretly? Absolutely not! They themselves must come and escort us out!”The police officers reported these words to the magistrates. They were frightened when they heard Paul and Silas were Roman citizensand came and apologized to them. After they brought them out, they asked them repeatedly to leave the city.When they came out of the prison, they entered Lydia’s house, and when they saw the brothers, they encouraged them and then departed.

I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith!

Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will trouble, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?As it is written,“ For your sake we encounter death all day long; we were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”No, in all these things we have complete victory through him who loved us!

You have not yet resisted to the point of bloodshed in your struggle against sin.

So I endure all things for the sake of those chosen by God, that they too may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus and its eternal glory.This saying is trustworthy: If we died with him, we will also live with him.If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he will also deny us.

Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.For this reason, take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand your ground on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand.Stand firm therefore, by fastening the belt of truth around your waist, by putting on the breastplate of righteousness,by fitting your feet with the preparation that comes from the good news of peace,and in all of this, by taking up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.With every prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit, and to this end be alert, with all perseverance and requests for all the saints.

But remember the former days when you endured a harsh conflict of suffering after you were enlightened.At times you were publicly exposed to abuse and afflictions, and at other times you came to share with others who were treated in that way.

I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble and suffering, but take courage– I have conquered the world.”

But they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die.

Compete well for the faith and lay hold of that eternal life you were called for and made your good confession for in the presence of many witnesses.

For, I think, God has exhibited us apostles last of all, as men condemned to die, because we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to people.We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, we are dishonored!To the present hour we are hungry and thirsty, poorly clothed, brutally treated, and without a roof over our heads.We do hard work, toiling with our own hands. When we are verbally abused, we respond with a blessing, when persecuted, we endure,when people lie about us, we answer in a friendly manner. We are the world’s dirt and scum, even now.I am not writing these things to shame you, but to correct you as my dear children.

For you became imitators, brothers and sisters, of God’s churches in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, because you too suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they in fact did from the Jews,who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and persecuted us severely. They are displeasing to God and are opposed to all people,

Do not be afraid of the things you are about to suffer. The devil is about to have some of you thrown into prison so you may be tested, and you will experience suffering for ten days. Remain faithful even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown that is life itself.The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will in no way be harmed by the second death.’

Why too are we in danger every hour?Every day I am in danger of death! This is as sure as my boasting in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord.If from a human point of view I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what did it benefit me? If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.

We sent Timothy, our brother and fellow worker for God in the gospel of Christ, to strengthen you and encourage you about your faith,so that no one would be shaken by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this.For in fact when we were with you, we were telling you in advance that we would suffer affliction, and so it has happened, as you well know.

Toward this goal I also labor, struggling according to his power that powerfully works in me.For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for those who have not met me face to face.
