Don’t be intimidated in any way by your enemies. This will be a sign to them that they are going to be destroyed, but that you are going to be saved, even by God himself.

Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you.Instead, be very glad— for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self discipline.So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either, even though I’m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News.

And God will use this persecution to show his justice and to make you worthy of his Kingdom, for which you are suffering.In his justice he will pay back those who persecute you.

This is a trustworthy saying: If we die with him, we will also live with him.If we endure hardship, we will reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us.

And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

“ Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

See, God has come to save me. I will trust in him and not be afraid. The Lord God is my strength and my song; he has given me victory.”

“ Listen to me, you who know right from wrong, you who cherish my law in your hearts. Do not be afraid of people’s scorn, nor fear their insults.

“ I, yes I, am the one who comforts you. So why are you afraid of mere humans, who wither like the grass and disappear?

God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.“ God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers.Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.

Praise the Lord; praise God our savior! For each day he carries us in his arms. InterludeOur God is a God who saves! The Sovereign Lord rescues us from death.

“ But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my followers.But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.So don’t worry in advance about how to answer the charges against you,for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you!Even those closest to you— your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends— will betray you. They will even kill some of you.And everyone will hate you because you are my followers.But not a hair of your head will perish!By standing firm, you will win your souls.

So we can say with confidence,“ The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”

But Peter and John replied,“ Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him?We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.”The council then threatened them further, but they finally let them go because they didn’t know how to punish them without starting a riot. For everyone was praising Godfor this miraculous sign— the healing of a man who had been lame for more than forty years.As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said.When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God:“ O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying,‘ Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans?The kings of the earth prepared for battle; the rulers gathered together against the Lord and against his Messiah.’“ In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will.And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word.Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.

And then all people will see the salvation sent from God.’”

You know how badly we had been treated at Philippi just before we came to you and how much we suffered there. Yet our God gave us the courage to declare his Good News to you boldly, in spite of great opposition.

“ Dear friends, don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot do any more to you after that.But I’ll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill you and then throw you into hell. Yes, he’s the one to fear.“ What is the price of five sparrows— two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them.And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw some of you into prison to test you. You will suffer for ten days. But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life.

So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it.”

But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God.”

I trust in you for salvation, O Lord!

The others accepted his advice. They called in the apostles and had them flogged. Then they ordered them never again to speak in the name of Jesus, and they let them go.The apostles left the high council rejoicing that God had counted them worthy to suffer disgrace for the name of Jesus.And every day, in the Temple and from house to house, they continued to teach and preach this message:“ Jesus is the Messiah.”
