摩西向海伸手，耶和華就用強勁的東風，使海水在一夜間退去，海就成了乾地；水分開了。以色列人下到海中，走在乾地上，水在他們左右成了牆壁。埃及人追趕他們，法老一切的馬匹、戰車和戰車長都跟着下到海中。破曉時分，耶和華從雲柱、火柱中瞭望埃及的軍兵，使埃及的軍兵混亂。他使他們的車輪脫落，難以前行，埃及人說：「我們從以色列人面前逃跑吧！因耶和華為他們作戰，攻擊埃及了。」耶和華對摩西說：「你要向海伸手，使水回流到埃及人，他們的戰車和戰車長身上。」摩西就向海伸手，到了天亮的時候，海恢復原狀。埃及人逃避水的時候，耶和華把他們推入海中。海水回流，淹沒了戰車和戰車長，以及那些跟着以色列人下到海中的法老全軍，連一個也沒有剩下。以色列人卻在海中走乾地，水在他們的左右成了牆壁。那一日，耶和華拯救以色列脫離埃及人的手。以色列人看見埃及人死在海邊。以色列人看見耶和華向埃及人所施展的大能，百姓就敬畏耶和華，並且信服耶和華和他的僕人摩西。

摩西領以色列人從紅海起程，到了書珥的曠野，在曠野走了三天，找不到水。到了瑪拉，他們不能喝瑪拉的水，因為水是苦的；所以那地名叫瑪拉。百姓就向摩西發怨言，說：「我們喝甚麼呢？」摩西呼求耶和華，耶和華指示他一棵樹。他把樹丟在水裏，水就變甜了。耶和華在那裏為他們定了律例、典章，在那裏考驗他們。他說：「你若留心聽從耶和華－你神的話，行我眼中看為正的事，側耳聽我的誡令，遵守我一切的律例，我就不將所加於埃及人的疾病加在你身上，因為我是醫治你的耶和華。」
