“‘ But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land, those you allow to remain will become barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will give you trouble in the land where you will live.

倘若你们不赶出那地的居民，所容留的居民就必作你们眼中的刺，肋下的荆棘，也必在你们所住的地上扰害你们。

倘若你们不把那地的居民从你们面前赶出去，那留下的居民就必成为你们眼中的刺，肋下的荆棘，也必在你们所住的地上扰乱你们；

倘若你们不把那地的居民从你们面前赶出去，那留下的居民就必成为你们眼中的刺，肋下的荆棘，也必在你们所住的地上扰乱你们；

如果你们不赶走那里的居民，留下来的人必成为你们眼里的刺和肋旁的荆棘，在你们所居之地搅扰你们，

如果你们不把那地的居民从你们面前赶出去，所留下的人就必成为你们眼中的刺，肋旁的荆棘，在你们所住的地方扰害你们；

倘若你們不趕出那地的居民，所容留的居民就必作你們眼中的刺，肋下的荊棘，也必在你們所住的地上擾害你們。

如果你們不趕走那裡的居民，留下來的人必成為你們眼裡的刺和肋旁的荊棘，在你們所居之地攪擾你們，

如果你們不把那地的居民從你們面前趕出去，所留下的人就必成為你們眼中的刺，肋旁的荊棘，在你們所住的地方擾害你們；

你們若不把那地的居民從你們面前趕出去，你們所讓存留的人就會成了你們眼中的刺、肋下的荊棘，也會在你們所住的地擾害你們。

斯土之民、爾不驅逐、則爾所遺者、必為爾目中之刺、脇下之棘、擾爾於所居之地、

斯土之眾、爾不驅逐、則其遺民、必為爾目中之刺、肘下之棘、困苦爾於此。

若爾不驅逐斯地之居民、爾所存留者、必為爾目中之荊、脇下之刺、必擾害爾於爾所居之地、

“‘ But suppose you do not drive out the people living in the land. Then those you allow to remain there will become like needles in your eyes. They will become like thorns in your sides. They will give you trouble in the land where you will live.

But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then those of them whom you let remain shall be as barbs in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall trouble you in the land where you dwell.

But if you fail to drive out the people who live in the land, those who remain will be like splinters in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will harass you in the land where you live.

But if you don’t drive out the inhabitants of the land before you, those you allow to remain will become barbs for your eyes and thorns for your sides; they will harass you in the land where you will live.

But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from you, then it will come about that those whom you let remain of them will be like thorns in your eyes and like pricks in your sides, and they will trouble you in the land in which you live.

And I have also said,‘ I will not drive them out before you; they will become traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you.’”

They did not destroy the peoples as the Lord had commanded them,but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs.They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them.

“ But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them and associate with them,then you may be sure that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land, which the Lord your God has given you.

You must destroy all the peoples the Lord your God gives over to you. Do not look on them with pity and do not serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you.

Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you.”

for they will turn your children away from following me to serve other gods, and the Lord’s anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you.

The Benjamites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.Now the tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the Lord was with them.When they sent men to spy out Bethel( formerly called Luz),the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him,“ Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.”So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family.He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day.But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land.When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely.Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them.Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor.Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob.The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out.Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them.The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain.And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor.The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond.

“‘ No longer will the people of Israel have malicious neighbors who are painful briers and sharp thorns. Then they will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.
