你不可跪拜事奉他們的神明，也不可隨從他們的習俗，卻要徹底廢除，完全打碎他們的柱像。

「你們不可為自己造虛無的神明，不可豎立雕刻的偶像或柱像，也不可在你們的地上安放石像，向它跪拜，因為我是耶和華－你們的上帝。

當耶和華－你的上帝把他們交給你，你擊殺他們的時候，你要完全消滅他們，不可與他們立約，也不可憐惜他們。不可與他們結親；不可將你的女兒嫁給他的兒子，也不可叫你的兒子娶他的女兒。因為他必使你的兒女離棄我，去事奉別神，以致耶和華的怒氣向你們發作，迅速將你除滅。你們卻要這樣處置他們：拆毀他們的祭壇，打碎他們的柱像，砍斷他們的亞舍拉，用火焚燒他們雕刻的偶像。

但是這些民族的城鎮，就是耶和華－你上帝所賜給你的產業，其中凡有氣息的，一個都不可存留。你要照耶和華－你上帝所吩咐的，將這些赫人、亞摩利人、迦南人、比利洗人、希未人、耶布斯人全都滅絕，免得他們教導你們去行一切可憎惡的事，就是他們向自己神明所行的，使你們得罪耶和華－你們的上帝。

我要定你的疆界，從紅海直到非利士海，從曠野直到大河。我要把那地的居民交在你手中，你要把他們從你面前趕出去。不可跟他們和他們的神明立約。他們不可住在你的地上，免得他們使你得罪我。你若事奉他們的神明，必成為你的圈套。」

他們不照耶和華所吩咐的滅絕外邦人，反倒與列國相交，學習他們的行為，事奉他們的偶像，這就成了自己的圈套。

你們佔領的國家所事奉他們眾神明的地方，無論是在高山，在小山，在一切的青翠樹下，你們要徹底毀壞；要拆毀他們的祭壇，打碎他們的柱像，用火焚燒他們的亞舍拉，砍斷他們神明的雕刻偶像，並要從那地方除去他們的名。

你要謹慎，不可與你所要去那地的居民立約，免得他們成為你中間的圈套。你要拆毀他們的祭壇，打碎他們的柱像，砍斷他們的亞舍拉。不可敬拜別神，因為耶和華是忌邪的上帝，他的名是忌邪者。你不可與那地的居民立約，因為他們隨從自己的神明行淫；祭他們神明的時候，有人邀請你參加，你就會吃他的祭物。你為你兒子娶他們的女兒為妻，他們的女兒因着隨從她們的神明行淫，就引誘你的兒子也隨從她們的神明行淫。「不可為自己鑄造神像。

你們要用火焚燒他們神明的雕刻偶像；不可貪愛偶像上的金銀，也不可私自收起來，免得你因此陷入圈套，因為這是耶和華－你上帝所憎惡的。你不可把可憎之物帶進你的家，否則，你就像它一樣成為當毀滅的。你要徹底憎恨它，極其厭惡它，因為這是當毀滅的。」

不可與你們中間所剩下的這些國家往來。你們不可提他們神明的名，不可指着它們起誓，不可事奉它們，也不可敬拜它們。

那時你要謹慎，在他們從你面前被除滅之後，你不可受引誘隨從他們，也不可求問他們的神明，說：『這些國家怎樣事奉他們的神明，我也要照樣做。』你不可向耶和華－你的上帝這樣做，因為他們向他們的神明做了耶和華所憎恨、所厭惡的一切事，甚至將自己的兒女用火焚燒，獻給他們的神明。

以色列人用刀擊殺城中所有的人，把他們完全滅盡；凡有氣息的，沒有留下一個。約書亞又用火焚燒夏瑣。約書亞奪了這些王的一切城鎮，擒獲了這些王，用刀殺了他們，把他們完全滅盡，正如耶和華的僕人摩西所吩咐的。
