他們來到以實各谷；從那裏砍了一根枝子，上頭有一掛葡萄，須要兩個人用杠抬着。他們還帶了些石榴和無花果來。為了以色列人從那裏砍下來的那掛葡萄，那地方才叫做以實各谷。窺探那地過了四十天，他們就回來。來到巴蘭曠野的加低斯、見摩西、亞倫和以色列人全會眾，向他們和全會眾報告，又把那地的果子給他們看。他們向摩西敘說：『我們到了你所打發我們去的那地，果然是流奶與蜜的；這就是它的果子。不過住在那地的人民很壯健、城邑也有堡壘、又極大；我們也看見亞衲人的後代在那裏。有亞瑪力人住在南地；有赫人耶布斯人亞摩利人住在山地；有迦南人住在海邊、和約但河旁。』迦勒在摩西面前叫人民安靜下來、說：『我們立刻上去、取得那地吧！我們足能勝過它。』但是那些和他一同上去的人說：『我們不能上去攻擊那民族，因為他們比我們強壯。』那些探子向以色列人發表他們所窺探之地的惡報告、說：『我們所經過而窺探的地、那是個吞喫居民之地，並且我們所看見的、其中的人民、都是身量高大的人。在那裏我們看見了巨人、亞衲人的子孫、屬於巨人一種的；據我們看、我們正如蚱蜢一樣；據他們看、我們也正如蚱蜢。當下全會眾就放聲嚷起來；那一夜人民都哭了。以色列眾人向摩西、亞倫發怨言；全會眾對他們說：『巴不得我們早死在埃及地！巴不得我們早死在這曠野！永恆主為甚麼把我們領到這地來倒斃在刀劍之下呢？我們的妻子和小孩必被擄掠了。我們回埃及去、不更好麼？』他們就彼此說：『我們立個首領，回埃及去吧！』摩西、亞倫就將臉俯伏在以色列人會眾全體大眾面前。窺探那地的人之中、嫩的兒子約書亞和耶孚尼的兒子迦勒、就撕裂衣服，對以色列人全會眾說：『我們所經過而窺探的地、是極其美好之地。永恆主若喜愛我們，他就會領我們進那地、把地賜給我們、就是流奶與蜜之地。只是你們不可背叛永恆主，也不要怕那地的人民，因為他們是我們所可喫的；並且蔭庇他們的已經離開他們，而永恆主卻和我們同在；不要怕他們。』全會眾都說要扔石頭把這二人砍死。永恆主的榮光卻在會棚中向以色列眾人顯現。

於是他們轉了身、上山地去，到達了以實各谿谷，去偵探那地。他們手裏拿着那地的果子下來見我們，回報我們、說：「永恆主我們的上帝所賜給我們的是個美好之地。」『你們卻不情願上去，竟違背了永恆主你們的上帝所吩咐的；在帳棚裏埋怨說：「永恆主因為恨我們，所以將我們從埃及地領出來，要把我們交在亞摩利人手中、來消滅我們。我們上哪裏去呢？我們的族弟兄使我們膽戰心驚、說：『那地的人民比我們又大又高；他們的城邑又大又堅固，高得頂天；並且我們還看見亞衲人在那裏呢。』」
