他们来到以实各谷，从那里砍下了一根葡萄枝子，上头只有一挂葡萄，两个人用杠抬着回来；他们也带了些石榴和无花果回来。因为以色列人从那里砍来的那挂葡萄，所以那地方叫作以实各谷。四十天以后，他们窥探那地完毕，就回来。他们来到了巴兰旷野的加低斯，见摩西、亚伦和以色列的全体会众，向摩西、亚伦及全体会众报告，又把那地的果子给他们看。他们告诉摩西：“我们到了你派我们去的那地，果然是流奶与蜜的地，这就是那地的果子。只是住在那地的人强壮，城又坚固又十分高大，并且我们在那里也看见了亚衲族人的后裔。有亚玛力人住在南地；赫人、耶布斯人、亚摩利人住在山地；迦南人住在海边和约旦河沿岸。”迦勒在摩西面前使众人镇静，说：“我们立刻上去，占领那地吧！因为我们必能得胜。”但是，那些与他同去的人却说：“我们不能上去攻击那民，因为他们比我们强。”那些探子就他们窥探之地向以色列人报恶信，说：“我们经过要窥探的地方，是个吞吃居民的地方；我们在那里看见的人，个个都高大。在那里我们看见了巨人，就是亚衲人的子孙，是巨人的后裔；我们看自己好像是蚱蜢，他们看我们也是这样。”当时，全体会众大声喧嚷；那夜众民都哭号。以色列人向摩西和亚伦发怨言；全体会众都对他们说：“但愿我们早死在埃及地，或死在这旷野。耶和华为什么把我们领到这地来，死在刀剑之下呢？我们的妻子和孩子要被掳掠。我们回埃及去，岂不更好吗？”于是他们彼此说：“我们另立一个首领，回埃及去吧。”摩西和亚伦就俯伏在以色列全体会众面前。窥探那地的人中，有嫩的儿子约书亚和耶孚尼的儿子迦勒；他们撕裂衣服，对以色列全体会众说：“我们去窥探的那地，是十分美好的地方。耶和华若是喜悦我们，就必把我们领进那地，把那地赐给我们，那地原是流奶与蜜的地。只要你们不背叛耶和华，就不必怕那地的人，因为他们是我们的食物；荫庇他们的，已经离开他们了，耶和华却与我们同在；不要怕他们。”全体会众都说要用石头打死他们二人。这时，耶和华的荣光在会幕中向以色列众人显现。

于是他们转身出发，上了山地，到了以实各谷，窥探那地。他们手里拿着那地的果子，带下来到我们这里，并且向我们回报，说：‘耶和华我们的神要赐给我们的地是美地。’“但你们不肯上去，竟违背了耶和华你们的神的吩咐；你们在帐幕里抱怨，说：‘耶和华因为恨我们，所以把我们从埃及地领出来，要把我们交在亚摩利人手中，消灭我们。我们上哪里去呢？我们的兄弟使我们心灰意冷，说：那地的人比我们高大；他们的城邑又大又坚固，高耸入天；我们在那里还看见有亚衲族的人。’
