他們來到以實各谷，在那裡砍下一根葡萄枝，上面有一串葡萄，由兩個人用杠子抬著，又採了一些石榴和無花果。因為他們在那裡砍了一串葡萄，所以就稱那地方為以實各谷。過了四十天，他們打探完畢，返回營地。他們來到巴蘭曠野的加低斯向摩西、亞倫和以色列全體會眾彙報，把當地的果子給大家看。他們對摩西說：「我們照你的指示打探了那地方，果然是奶蜜之鄉，這些都是那裡的果子。但那裡的居民很強悍，城邑又大又堅固。我們在那裡還見到亞衲人的子孫。亞瑪力人住在南地，赫人、耶布斯人和亞摩利人住在山區，迦南人住在海邊和約旦河沿岸。」迦勒讓站在摩西面前的民眾安靜，然後說：「我們立刻去佔領那地方吧！我們必能取勝。」跟他一起去打探的人卻說：「我們不能去攻打那些人，他們比我們強大。」他們還危言聳聽，說：「我們去打探的地方是吞吃居民之地，我們看見的人個個身材高大。我們在那裡看見了亞衲人的子孫，他們是巨人的後裔，我們跟他們相比就像蚱蜢，他們看我們也像蚱蜢。」當晚，全體會眾放聲大哭，整夜哀號。他們埋怨摩西和亞倫說：「我們還不如死在埃及或曠野！耶和華為什麼把我們領到這裡來，讓我們死於刀下？我們的妻兒必被擄去。我們還不如返回埃及。」他們彼此議論說：「我們選一位首領帶我們回埃及吧！」摩西和亞倫俯伏在以色列全體會眾面前。打探迦南的人中，嫩的兒子約書亞和耶孚尼的兒子迦勒撕裂衣服，對以色列全體會眾說：「我們去打探的地方是佳美之地。如果耶和華喜悅我們，祂必把我們帶到那片土地，將那奶蜜之鄉賜給我們。你們不要背叛耶和華，也不要害怕那裡的人，他們不過是我們的獵物，他們已失去庇護。耶和華與我們同在，不要怕他們。」但全體會眾威脅要用石頭打死他們二人。這時耶和華的榮光在會幕中向以色列人顯現。

他們前往山區，到了以實各谷，打探那地方。他們帶回來一些那裡的果子，稟告說，『我們的上帝耶和華賜給我們的地方很好。』「但你們卻違背你們上帝耶和華的命令，不肯上去。你們在帳篷中埋怨說，『耶和華憎恨我們，所以才領我們離開埃及，要把我們交在亞摩利人手裡，讓他們消滅我們。我們怎能上去呢？那些弟兄的報告令我們膽戰心驚，他們說那裡的人比我們高大，城邑雄偉，城牆高達雲霄，還有亞衲人在那裡。』
