他们来到以实各谷，在那里砍下一根葡萄枝，上面有一串葡萄，由两个人用杠子抬着，又采了一些石榴和无花果。因为他们在那里砍了一串葡萄，所以就称那地方为以实各谷。过了四十天，他们打探完毕，返回营地。他们来到巴兰旷野的加低斯向摩西、亚伦和以色列全体会众汇报，把当地的果子给大家看。他们对摩西说：“我们照你的指示打探了那地方，果然是奶蜜之乡，这些都是那里的果子。但那里的居民很强悍，城邑又大又坚固。我们在那里还见到亚衲人的子孙。亚玛力人住在南地，赫人、耶布斯人和亚摩利人住在山区，迦南人住在海边和约旦河沿岸。”迦勒让站在摩西面前的民众安静，然后说：“我们立刻去占领那地方吧！我们必能取胜。”跟他一起去打探的人却说：“我们不能去攻打那些人，他们比我们强大。”他们还危言耸听，说：“我们去打探的地方是吞吃居民之地，我们看见的人个个身材高大。我们在那里看见了亚衲人的子孙，他们是巨人的后裔，我们跟他们相比就像蚱蜢，他们看我们也像蚱蜢。”当晚，全体会众放声大哭，整夜哀号。他们埋怨摩西和亚伦说：“我们还不如死在埃及或旷野！耶和华为什么把我们领到这里来，让我们死于刀下？我们的妻儿必被掳去。我们还不如返回埃及。”他们彼此议论说：“我们选一位首领带我们回埃及吧！”摩西和亚伦俯伏在以色列全体会众面前。打探迦南的人中，嫩的儿子约书亚和耶孚尼的儿子迦勒撕裂衣服，对以色列全体会众说：“我们去打探的地方是佳美之地。如果耶和华喜悦我们，祂必把我们带到那片土地，将那奶蜜之乡赐给我们。你们不要背叛耶和华，也不要害怕那里的人，他们不过是我们的猎物，他们已失去庇护。耶和华与我们同在，不要怕他们。”但全体会众威胁要用石头打死他们二人。这时耶和华的荣光在会幕中向以色列人显现。

他们前往山区，到了以实各谷，打探那地方。他们带回来一些那里的果子，禀告说，‘我们的上帝耶和华赐给我们的地方很好。’“但你们却违背你们上帝耶和华的命令，不肯上去。你们在帐篷中埋怨说，‘耶和华憎恨我们，所以才领我们离开埃及，要把我们交在亚摩利人手里，让他们消灭我们。我们怎能上去呢？那些弟兄的报告令我们胆战心惊，他们说那里的人比我们高大，城邑雄伟，城墙高达云霄，还有亚衲人在那里。’
