for she will eat them secretly for lack of everything in the siege and desperate straits in which your enemy shall distress you at all your gates.“ If you do not carefully observe all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and awesome name, THE LORD YOUR GOD,then the Lord will bring upon you and your descendants extraordinary plagues— great and prolonged plagues— and serious and prolonged sicknesses.Moreover He will bring back on you all the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you.Also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in this Book of the Law, will the Lord bring upon you until you are destroyed.You shall be left few in number, whereas you were as the stars of heaven in multitude, because you would not obey the voice of the Lord your God.And it shall be, that just as the Lord rejoiced over you to do you good and multiply you, so the Lord will rejoice over you to destroy you and bring you to nothing; but there the Lord will give you a trembling heart, failing eyes, and anguish of soul.Your life shall hang in doubt before you; you shall fear day and night, and have no assurance of life.In the morning you shall say,‘ Oh, that it were evening!’ And at evening you shall say,‘ Oh, that it were morning!’ because of the fear which terrifies your heart, and because of the sight which your eyes see.“ And the Lord will take you back to Egypt in ships, by the way of which I said to you,‘ You shall never see it again.’ And there you shall be offered for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”

Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died.

But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them,I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess.I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live;

‘ so they shall surrender all your wives and children to the Chaldeans. You shall not escape from their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon. And you shall cause this city to be burned with fire.’”

‘ But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments,and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant,I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.I will set My face against you, and you shall be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you shall reign over you, and you shall flee when no one pursues you.‘ And after all this, if you do not obey Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.

Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with offense.It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak.

“ Thus says the whole congregation of the Lord:‘ What treachery is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the Lord, in that you have built for yourselves an altar, that you might rebel this day against the Lord?Is the iniquity of Peor not enough for us, from which we are not cleansed till this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord,but that you must turn away this day from following the Lord? And it shall be, if you rebel today against the Lord, that tomorrow He will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.

Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in.But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised.But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.And your sons shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and bear the brunt of your infidelity, until your carcasses are consumed in the wilderness.According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for each day you shall bear your guilt one year, namely forty years, and you shall know My rejection.I the Lord have spoken this. I will surely do so to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.’”

And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.

Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!
