听见他而又背叛他的是谁呢？岂不是跟着摩西从埃及出来的众人吗？上帝向谁发怒四十年之久呢？岂不是那些犯罪而陈尸在旷野的人吗？他向谁起誓，不容他们进入他的安息呢？岂不是向那些不信从的人吗？这样看来，他们不能进入安息是因为不信的缘故了。

从离开加低斯‧巴尼亚到渡过撒烈溪，这段时期共三十八年，直到这一代的战士都从营中灭尽，正如耶和华向他们所起的誓。耶和华的手也攻击他们，将他们从营中除灭，直到灭尽。

因此，他使他们的日子全归虚空，叫他们的年岁尽属惊恐。

这些被数的人中，没有一个是摩西和亚伦祭司先前在西奈旷野所数的以色列人，因为耶和华论到他们说：“他们必死在旷野。”所以，除了耶孚尼的儿子迦勒和嫩的儿子约书亚以外，他们一个也没有存留。
