The Lord’s anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.

The Lord became very angry with Israel. He made them wander around in the desert for 40 years. They wandered until all the people who had done evil in his sight had died.

然而他們大多數人、上帝並不喜悅：他們都在野地覆亡了。

當時聽而惹他發怒的是誰呢？豈不是那些由摩西領導出埃及的眾人麼？上帝四十年厭惡誰呢？豈不是那些犯了罪、屍首倒在曠野的人麼？他向誰起誓說、他們必不得以進入他的安息呢？豈不是向那些硬不信從的人是向誰呢？這樣、我們就看清楚了，他們不能進入，是因為不信的緣故。

自從我們離開加低斯巴尼亞、到過了撒烈谿谷的時候、這其間的日子共有三十八年，等那世代的戰士都從營間滅盡了，你們才得過去，照永恆主向他們所起的誓。永恆主的手簡直攻擊了他們，使他們從營間潰亂，直到滅盡為止。

因此上帝使他們的日子全消盡於虛幻中，使他們的年月也消逝於突臨的驚恐中。

但這些人中間沒有一個人是摩西和祭司亞倫、在西乃曠野點閱以色列人所點閱過的。因為永恆主曾經說到他們、說：『他們一定必死在曠野。』所以除了耶孚尼的兒子迦勒、和嫩的兒子約書亞以外、他們中間連一個人也沒有留下來。
