The Lord’s anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.

但他們中間多半是神不喜歡的人，所以在曠野倒斃。

那時，聽見他話惹他發怒的是誰呢？豈不是跟着摩西從埃及出來的眾人嗎？神四十年之久，又厭煩誰呢？豈不是那些犯罪、屍首倒在曠野的人嗎？又向誰起誓，不容他們進入他的安息呢？豈不是向那些不信從的人嗎？這樣看來，他們不能進入安息是因為不信的緣故了。

自從離開加低斯‧巴尼亞，到過了撒烈溪的時候，共有三十八年，等那世代的兵丁都從營中滅盡，正如耶和華向他們所起的誓。耶和華的手也攻擊他們，將他們從營中除滅，直到滅盡。

因此，他叫他們的日子全歸虛空，叫他們的年歲盡屬驚恐。

但被數的人中，沒有一個是摩西和祭司亞倫從前在西奈的曠野所數的以色列人，因為耶和華論到他們說：「他們必要死在曠野。」所以，除了耶孚尼的兒子迦勒和嫩的兒子約書亞以外，連一個人也沒有存留。
