The Lord’s anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.

但他們大多數的人，都得不到神的喜悅，因此他們都死在曠野。

那時，聽了他的話而惹他發怒的是誰呢？不就是摩西從埃及領出來的那些人嗎？四十年之久，神向誰發怒呢？不就是向那些犯了罪陳屍曠野的人嗎？他又向誰起誓說，他們絕對不可以進入他的安息呢？不就是向那些不順從的人嗎？這樣看來，他們不能進入安息，是因為不信的緣故。

自從我們離開加低斯．巴尼亞，直到過了撒烈溪的日子，共有三十八年，等到那世代的戰士都從營中滅絕為止，正像耶和華向他們所起的誓一樣。耶和華的手攻擊了他們，把他們從營中除滅，直到滅盡為止。

所以神使他們的日子在虛空中消逝，使他們的歲月在驚恐中完結。

這些人中間，沒有一個是摩西和亞倫祭司從前在西奈曠野數點以色列人的時候，數點過的。因為耶和華論到他們曾經說過：“他們必死在曠野。”所以除了耶孚尼的兒子迦勒和嫩的兒子約書亞以外，連一個也沒有剩下。
