但他们大多数的人，都得不到神的喜悦，因此他们都死在旷野。

那时，听了他的话而惹他发怒的是谁呢？不就是摩西从埃及领出来的那些人吗？四十年之久，神向谁发怒呢？不就是向那些犯了罪陈尸旷野的人吗？他又向谁起誓说，他们绝对不可以进入他的安息呢？不就是向那些不顺从的人吗？这样看来，他们不能进入安息，是因为不信的缘故。

自从我们离开加低斯．巴尼亚，直到过了撒烈溪的日子，共有三十八年，等到那世代的战士都从营中灭绝为止，正像耶和华向他们所起的誓一样。耶和华的手攻击了他们，把他们从营中除灭，直到灭尽为止。

所以神使他们的日子在虚空中消逝，使他们的岁月在惊恐中完结。

这些人中间，没有一个是摩西和亚伦祭司从前在西奈旷野数点以色列人的时候，数点过的。因为耶和华论到他们曾经说过：“他们必死在旷野。”所以除了耶孚尼的儿子迦勒和嫩的儿子约书亚以外，连一个也没有剩下。
