Moses chose one out of every 50 people and animals. He gave them to the Levites. They were accountable for taking care of the Lord’ s holy tent. Moses did just as the Lord had commanded him.

from the people of Israel’s half Moses took one of every 50, both of persons and of beasts, and gave them to the Levites who kept guard over the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.

Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you.Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.

Israel’s watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream, they love to sleep.They are dogs with mighty appetites; they never have enough. They are shepherds who lack understanding; they all turn to their own way, they seek their own gain.

You must not eat in your own towns the tithe of your grain and new wine and olive oil, or the firstborn of your herds and flocks, or whatever you have vowed to give, or your freewill offerings or special gifts.Instead, you are to eat them in the presence of the Lord your God at the place the Lord your God will choose— you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites from your towns— and you are to rejoice before the Lord your God in everything you put your hand to.Be careful not to neglect the Levites as long as you live in your land.

“ I give to the Levites all the tithes in Israel as their inheritance in return for the work they do while serving at the tent of meeting.From now on the Israelites must not go near the tent of meeting, or they will bear the consequences of their sin and will die.It is the Levites who are to do the work at the tent of meeting and bear the responsibility for any offenses they commit against it. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. They will receive no inheritance among the Israelites.Instead, I give to the Levites as their inheritance the tithes that the Israelites present as an offering to the Lord. That is why I said concerning them:‘ They will have no inheritance among the Israelites.’”

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.He told them,“ The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.“ When you enter a house, first say,‘ Peace to this house.’If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you.Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.“ When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.
