Moses took one out of every fifty, selected from the people and the livestock of the Israelites’ half. He gave them to the Levites who perform the duties of the LORD’s tabernacle, as the LORD had commanded him.

From the Israelites’ half, Moses selected one out of every fifty people and animals, as the Lord commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.

Moses chose one out of every 50 people and animals. He gave them to the Levites. They were accountable for taking care of the Lord’ s holy tent. Moses did just as the Lord had commanded him.

Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to give recognition to those who labor among you and lead you in the Lord and admonish you,and to regard them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

Israel’s watchmen are blind, all of them, they know nothing; all of them are mute dogs, they cannot bark; they dream, lie down, and love to sleep.These dogs have fierce appetites; they never have enough. And they are shepherds who have no discernment; all of them turn to their own way, every last one for his own profit.

Within your city gates you may not eat the tenth of your grain, new wine, or fresh oil; the firstborn of your herd or flock; any of your vow offerings that you pledge; your freewill offerings; or your personal contributions.You are to eat them in the presence of the LORD your God at the place the LORD your God chooses— you, your son and daughter, your male and female slave, and the Levite who is within your city gates. Rejoice before the LORD your God in everything you do,and be careful not to neglect the Levite, as long as you live in your land.

“ Look, I have given the Levites every tenth in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work they do, the work of the tent of meeting.The Israelites must never again come near the tent of meeting, or they will incur guilt and die.The Levites will do the work of the tent of meeting, and they will bear the consequences of their iniquity. The Levites will not receive an inheritance among the Israelites; this is a permanent statute throughout your generations.For I have given them the tenth that the Israelites present to the LORD as a contribution for their inheritance. That is why I told them that they would not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.”

Now bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD who stand in the LORD’s house at night!

After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and he sent them ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself was about to go.He told them,“ The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.Now go; I’m sending you out like lambs among wolves.Don’t carry a money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals; don’t greet anyone along the road.Whatever house you enter, first say,‘ Peace to this household.’If a person of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Don’t move from house to house.When you enter any town, and they welcome you, eat the things set before you.
