他们的职任是协助亚伦的子孙，办理耶和华殿的事务，管理院子、厢房和洁净一切圣物，以及办理神殿的事务；又管理陈设饼、素祭细面，或无酵薄饼，或是煎盘烤的，或是用油调和的，以及管理各种量度的器具。每天早晨要侍立称谢和赞美耶和华，每天晚上也要这样；又要在安息日，每月初一日和指定的节日，按着数目照着规例，把燔祭不住地献在耶和华面前。他们要看守会幕和圣所，以及看管他们在耶和华殿里办事的亲族，亚伦的子孙。

从以色列人那一半中，无论是人、牛、驴、羊群，或是各样牲畜，都要抽出五十分之一，交给负责看守耶和华帐幕的利未人。”

亚伦祭司的儿子以利亚撒要作利未人众领袖中的领袖，要监察那些尽看守圣所职分的人。

耶希伊利的儿子西坦和他的兄弟约珥，掌管耶和华殿里的库房。

“关于利未人的职责是这样：从二十五岁及以上的，要进来办理会幕里的事务；到了五十岁，就要停止办理事务，不再办事；只要在会幕里帮助自己的兄弟，尽忠职守，事务却不必办理了。关于利未人的职守，你要这样向他们行。”
