And on the tenth day of this seventh month ye shall have a holy convocation; and ye shall afflict your souls: ye shall do no manner of work;

“‘ On the tenth day of this seventh month hold a sacred assembly. You must deny yourselves and do no work.

“‘ On the tenth day of the seventh month, come together for a special service. You must not eat anything on that day. You must not do any work on it.

“ On the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy convocation and afflict yourselves. You shall do no work,

“ Ten days later, on the tenth day of the same month, you must call another holy assembly. On that day, the Day of Atonement, the people must go without food and must do no ordinary work.

“ You are to hold a sacred assembly on the tenth day of this seventh month and practice self-denial; do not do any work.

‘ Then on the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy assembly, and you shall humble yourselves; you shall not do any work.

‘ On the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall afflict your souls; you shall not do any work.

“ You are to hold a sacred assembly on the tenth day of this seventh month and practice self-denial; you must not do any work.

And ye shall have on the tenth[ day] of this seventh month an holy convocation; and ye shall afflict your souls: ye shall not do any work[ therein]:

“‘ On the tenth day of this seventh month you are to have a holy assembly. You must humble yourselves; you must not do any work on it.

“‘ On the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall afflict your souls. You shall do no kind of work;

But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I afflicted my soul with fasting; And my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

And it shall be a statute for ever unto you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and shall do no manner of work, the home- born, or the stranger that sojourneth among you:for on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins shall ye be clean before Jehovah.It is a sabbath of solemn rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; it is a statute for ever.

And when much time was spent, and the voyage was now dangerous, because the Fast was now already gone by, Paul admonished them,

Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek of him a straight way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find your own pleasure, and exact all your labors.Behold, ye fast for strife and contention, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye fast not this day so as to make your voice to be heard on high.Is such the fast that I have chosen? the day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Jehovah?

knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away, that so we should no longer be in bondage to sin;

And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,Howbeit on the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement: it shall be a holy convocation unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto Jehovah.And ye shall do no manner of work in that same day; for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement for you before Jehovah your God.For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day; he shall be cut off from his people.And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any manner of work in that same day, that soul will I destroy from among his people.Ye shall do no manner of work: it is a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.It shall be unto you a sabbath of solemn rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye keep your sabbath.

And in that day did the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:

but I buffet my body, and bring it into bondage: lest by any means, after that I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected.

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all in like manner perish.

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they shall look unto me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first- born.

They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing seed for sowing, Shall doubtless come again with joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

I now rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye were made sorry unto repentance; for ye were made sorry after a godly sort, that ye might suffer loss by us in nothing.For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, a repentance which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.For behold, this selfsame thing, that ye were made sorry after a godly sort, what earnest care it wrought in you, yea what clearing of yourselves, yea what indignation, yea what fear, yea what longing, yea what zeal, yea what avenging! In everything ye approved yourselves to be pure in the matter.

Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded.Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you.

and to speak unto the priests of the house of Jehovah of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
