For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

The Lord had told the Israelites at Kadesh Barnea that they would certainly die in the desert. Not one of them was left alive except Caleb and Joshua. Caleb was the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua was the son of Nun.

For the Lord had said of them,“ They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

For the LORD had said to them that they would all die in the wilderness. None of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Of the twelve who had explored the land, only Joshua and Caleb remained alive.

Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did,

Now tell them this:‘ As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very things I heard you say.You will all drop dead in this wilderness! Because you complained against me, every one of you who is twenty years old or older and was included in the registration will die.You will not enter and occupy the land I swore to give you. The only exceptions will be Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off.

And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness?And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath that they would never enter his rest? Wasn’t it the people who disobeyed him?

I, the Lord, have spoken! I will certainly do these things to every member of the community who has conspired against me. They will be destroyed here in this wilderness, and here they will die!”

So I want to remind you, though you already know these things, that Jesus first rescued the nation of Israel from Egypt, but later he destroyed those who did not remain faithful.

You turn people back to dust, saying,“ Return to dust, you mortals!”For you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours.You sweep people away like dreams that disappear. They are like grass that springs up in the morning.In the morning it blooms and flourishes, but by evening it is dry and withered.We wither beneath your anger; we are overwhelmed by your fury.

They will never even see the land I swore to give their ancestors. None of those who have treated me with contempt will ever see it.But my servant Caleb has a different attitude than the others have. He has remained loyal to me, so I will bring him into the land he explored. His descendants will possess their full share of that land.

A delegation from the tribe of Judah, led by Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, came to Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb said to Joshua,“ Remember what the Lord said to Moses, the man of God, about you and me when we were at Kadesh barnea.I was forty years old when Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh barnea to explore the land of Canaan. I returned and gave an honest report,but my brothers who went with me frightened the people from entering the Promised Land. For my part, I wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.So that day Moses solemnly promised me,‘ The land of Canaan on which you were just walking will be your grant of land and that of your descendants forever, because you wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.’“ Now, as you can see, the Lord has kept me alive and well as he promised for all these forty five years since Moses made this promise— even while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Today I am eighty five years old.

“ Go to Moab, to the mountains east of the river, and climb Mount Nebo, which is across from Jericho. Look out across the land of Canaan, the land I am giving to the people of Israel as their own special possession.Then you will die there on the mountain. You will join your ancestors, just as Aaron, your brother, died on Mount Hor and joined his ancestors.

“ Thirty eight years passed from the time we first left Kadesh barnea until we finally crossed the Zered Brook! By then, all the men old enough to fight in battle had died in the wilderness, as the Lord had vowed would happen.The Lord struck them down until they had all been eliminated from the community.

That night the people of Israel left Rameses and started for Succoth. There were about 600,000 men, plus all the women and children.
