For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

可见，上帝既慈爱又严厉。祂对堕落的人是严厉的，对你却是慈爱的。你要常常活在祂的爱中，不然你也会被砍下来。

四十年之久惹上帝发怒的是谁呢？不就是那些犯罪作恶并倒毙在旷野的人吗？上帝起誓不准谁进入祂的安息呢？不就是那些不肯信从的人吗？

我耶和华已经说过。我必使你们这群与我为敌的恶人死在旷野，无一幸免。”

以下的事情，你们虽然都知道，但我还要再提醒你们：从前上帝把祂的子民从埃及救出来，后来把其中不信的人灭绝了。

你叫人归回尘土，说：“世人啊，归回尘土吧。”在你眼中，千年如一日，又如夜里的一更。你像急流一般把世人冲走，叫他们如梦消逝。他们像清晨的嫩草，清晨还生机盎然，傍晚就凋谢枯萎。你的怒气使我们灭亡，你的愤怒使我们战抖。

那时，犹大支派的人来到吉甲见约书亚，其中有基尼洗族耶孚尼的儿子迦勒。他对约书亚说：“你知道耶和华在加低斯·巴尼亚跟上帝的仆人摩西提到关于你和我的事。我四十岁那年，耶和华的仆人摩西从加低斯·巴尼亚派我来侦察这地方，我如实禀告他。与我同去的弟兄的禀告令以色列人胆战心惊，但我忠心地追随我的上帝耶和华。所以，当日摩西就向我起誓，‘你脚踏过的地方必永远归你和你的子孙作产业，因为你忠心地追随我的上帝耶和华。’耶和华照祂的应许，让我又活了四十五年，这些日子都是跟以色列人在旷野一起度过的。看！我现在已经八十五岁了，

“你去耶利哥对面的摩押，登上亚巴琳山区的尼波山，观看我要赐给以色列人作产业的迦南。之后，你会死在山上，归到你祖先那里，如亚伦在何珥山离世归祖一样。

我们从离开加低斯·巴尼亚到穿过撒烈溪用了三十八年。期间，那一代战士都死光了，正如耶和华的誓言。其实是耶和华的手攻击他们，直到把他们从营中全部消灭。
