扫罗对仆人说：“看哪，我们若去，送什么给那人呢？我们袋子里的食物都吃完了，也没有礼物可以送给神人，我们还有些什么呢？”仆人又回答扫罗说：“看哪，我手里还有四分之一舍客勒的银子，可以送给神人，请他指示我们当走的路。”

城里的领袖为贿赂行审判，祭司为酬劳施训诲，先知为银钱行占卜；他们却倚赖耶和华，说：“耶和华不是在我们中间吗？灾祸必不临到我们。”

他们离弃了正路，走入歧途，随从比珥的儿子巴兰的路；巴兰就是那贪爱不义的工钱的人，

因为这样的人不服侍我们的主基督，只服侍自己的肚腹，用花言巧语诱惑老实人的心。

巴兰见耶和华喜欢赐福给以色列，就不像前两次去求法术，却面向旷野。

但那些想要发财的人就陷在诱惑、罗网和许多无知有害的欲望中，使人沉沦，以致败坏和灭亡。贪财是万恶之根。有人因贪恋钱财而背离信仰，用许多愁苦把自己刺透了。

你们为几把大麦、几块饼，在我的百姓中亵渎我，对那肯听谎言的百姓说谎言，让不该死的人死，让不该活的人活。’”

这些狗贪食，不知饱足。这些牧人不知明辨，他们都偏行己路，人人追求自己的利益。

他们有祸了！因为他们走该隐的道路，又为财利往巴兰的错谬里直奔，并在可拉的背叛中灭亡了。

这些人的口必须堵住，因为他们贪不义之财，将不该教导的事教导人，败坏人的全家。

绝没有法术可以伤雅各，没有占卜可以害以色列。现在，人论及雅各，论及以色列必说：‘神成就了何等的事啊！’
