因為你們出埃及的時候，他們沒有拿食物和水在路上迎接你們，又因他們雇了美索不達米亞的毗奪人比珥的兒子巴蘭來咒詛你們。

那時，摩押王西撥的兒子巴勒起來攻擊以色列人，打發人召了比珥的兒子巴蘭來咒詛你們。

我的百姓啊，你們當追念摩押王巴勒所設的謀和比珥的兒子巴蘭回答他的話，並你們從什亭到吉甲所遇見的事，好使你們知道耶和華公義的作為。

他們有禍了！因為走了該隱的道路，又為利往巴蘭的錯謬裏直奔，並在可拉的背叛中滅亡了。

然而，有幾件事我要責備你：因為在你那裏有人服從了巴蘭的教訓；這巴蘭曾教導巴勒將絆腳石放在以色列人面前，叫他們吃祭偶像之物，行姦淫的事。

那時以色列人在所殺的人中，也用刀殺了比珥的兒子術士巴蘭。

巴蘭便題起詩歌說：巴勒引我出亞蘭，摩押王引我出東山，說：來啊，為我咒詛雅各；來啊，怒罵以色列。

我也要使你的後裔如同地上的塵沙那樣多，人若能數算地上的塵沙才能數算你的後裔。

耶和華使他的百姓生養眾多，使他們比敵人強盛，

他們離棄正路，就走差了，隨從比珥之子巴蘭的路。巴蘭就是那貪愛不義之工價的先知，他卻為自己的過犯受了責備；那不能說話的驢以人言攔阻先知的狂妄。

當日，人念摩西的律法書給百姓聽，遇見書上寫着說，亞捫人和摩押人永不可入神的會；因為他們沒有拿食物和水來迎接以色列人，且雇了巴蘭咒詛他們，但我們的神使那咒詛變為祝福。

以色列人生養眾多，並且繁茂，極其強盛，滿了那地。有不認識約瑟的新王起來，治理埃及，對他的百姓說：「看哪，這以色列民比我們還多，又比我們強盛。來吧，我們不如用巧計待他們，恐怕他們多起來，日後若遇甚麼爭戰的事，就連合我們的仇敵攻擊我們，離開這地去了。」
