摩西在途中夜宿的時候，耶和華遇見摩西，想要殺他。

耶和華的天使對他說：「你為何三次打你的驢？我特意來阻擋你，因為你走的路在我眼中是邪路。

祂抬起右手張弓搭箭，宛若仇敵，殺戮一切悅人眼目的人，將祂的怒火撒向錫安城的帳篷。

「看啊，我要差遣天使走在你前面，在路上保護你，帶領你平安地到達我為你預備的地方。

他跟天使角力得勝，向天使哭求福分。他在伯特利遇見祂，在那裡與祂說話——就是萬軍之上帝耶和華，耶和華是祂的名。

耶和華對何西阿說：「給他取名叫耶斯列，因為再過不久，我就要因耶戶家在耶斯列的屠殺而懲罰他們，消滅以色列國。

耶和華的天使說：「跟這些人去吧，但你只許按我的指示說話。」於是，巴蘭跟巴勒的使臣去了。

耶戶下令召開祭拜巴力的莊嚴聚會，於是他們發出通告。

他祝福約瑟說：「願我祖先亞伯拉罕和以撒敬拜的上帝，牧養我一生直到今天的上帝，救我脫離一切患難的天使，賜福這兩個孩子。願我和我祖先亞伯拉罕及以撒的名字藉著他們流傳。願他們在地上子孫興旺。」

忽然有耶和華的天使在荊棘裡的火焰中向他顯現。摩西看見荊棘雖然在燃燒，卻沒有被燒毀。摩西想：「我要過去看這個奇異的景象，荊棘為什麼沒有被燒掉呢？」耶和華上帝見他要上前觀看，就從荊棘叢中呼喚他說：「摩西！摩西！」摩西說：「我在這裡。」上帝說：「別再靠近，脫下你腳上的鞋子，因為你所站的地方是聖地。」又說：「我是你祖先的上帝，是亞伯拉罕的上帝，以撒的上帝，雅各的上帝。」摩西害怕看上帝，就把臉蒙起來。
