摩西在途中夜宿的时候，耶和华遇见摩西，想要杀他。

耶和华的天使对他说：“你为何三次打你的驴？我特意来阻挡你，因为你走的路在我眼中是邪路。

祂抬起右手张弓搭箭，宛若仇敌，杀戮一切悦人眼目的人，将祂的怒火撒向锡安城的帐篷。

“看啊，我要差遣天使走在你前面，在路上保护你，带领你平安地到达我为你预备的地方。

他跟天使角力得胜，向天使哭求福分。他在伯特利遇见祂，在那里与祂说话——就是万军之上帝耶和华，耶和华是祂的名。

耶和华对何西阿说：“给他取名叫耶斯列，因为再过不久，我就要因耶户家在耶斯列的屠杀而惩罚他们，消灭以色列国。

耶和华的天使说：“跟这些人去吧，但你只许按我的指示说话。”于是，巴兰跟巴勒的使臣去了。

耶户下令召开祭拜巴力的庄严聚会，于是他们发出通告。

他祝福约瑟说：“愿我祖先亚伯拉罕和以撒敬拜的上帝，牧养我一生直到今天的上帝，救我脱离一切患难的天使，赐福这两个孩子。愿我和我祖先亚伯拉罕及以撒的名字借着他们流传。愿他们在地上子孙兴旺。”

忽然有耶和华的天使在荆棘里的火焰中向他显现。摩西看见荆棘虽然在燃烧，却没有被烧毁。摩西想：“我要过去看这个奇异的景象，荆棘为什么没有被烧掉呢？”耶和华上帝见他要上前观看，就从荆棘丛中呼唤他说：“摩西！摩西！”摩西说：“我在这里。”上帝说：“别再靠近，脱下你脚上的鞋子，因为你所站的地方是圣地。”又说：“我是你祖先的上帝，是亚伯拉罕的上帝，以撒的上帝，雅各的上帝。”摩西害怕看上帝，就把脸蒙起来。
