亚玛力人和迦南人住在谷中，明天你们要转回去，沿着红海的路往旷野去。”

不可向他们挑战；他们的地，连脚掌可踏之处，我都不给你们，因我已将西珥山赐给以扫为业。你们要用钱向他们买粮吃，也要用钱向他们买水喝。因为耶和华—你的上帝在你手里所做的一切事上已赐福给你。你走这大旷野，他都知道。这四十年，耶和华—你的上帝与你同在，因此你一无所缺。’“于是，我们经过我们弟兄以扫子孙所住的西珥，从亚拉巴的路，经过以拉他、以旬‧迦别，转向摩押旷野的路去。

摩西就遵照耶和华的吩咐去做，他们在全会众的眼前上了何珥山。

但是，以东对他说：“你不可从我这里穿越！否则，我要带刀出去攻击你。”以色列人对他说：“我们只上大道。如果我和我的牲畜喝了你的水，我必付钱给你。我不求别的事，只求让我步行过去。”以东说：“你不可经过！”他就率领一大群军队，以强硬的手出来攻击以色列。这样，以东不肯让以色列穿越他的境内，以色列就转去，离开他了。以色列全会众从加低斯起行，到了何珥山。耶和华在以东地边界的何珥山对摩西、亚伦说：

免得有人被这些患难动摇。因为你们自己知道，我们受患难原是命定的。我们在你们那里的时候，曾预先告诉你们，我们必受患难；你们知道，这果然发生了。

坚固门徒的心，劝他们持守他们的信仰，说：“我们进入上帝的国，必须经历许多艰难。”

至于你们，要转回，从红海的路往旷野去。’
