摩西将这话告诉以色列人，只是他们因苦工愁烦，不肯听他的话。

你们为何使以色列人灰心丧胆、不过去进入耶和华所赐给他们的那地呢？

他们上以实各谷，去窥探那地回来的时候，使以色列人灰心丧胆，不进入耶和华所赐给他们的地。

亚玛力人和迦南人住在谷中，明天你们要转回，从红海的路往旷野去。”

不可与他们争战；他们的地，连脚掌可踏之处，我都不给你们，因我已将西珥山赐给以扫为业。你们要用钱向他们买粮吃，也要用钱向他们买水喝。因为耶和华你的神在你手里所办的一切事上已赐福与你。你走这大旷野，他都知道了。这四十年，耶和华你的神常与你同在，故此你一无所缺。’“于是，我们离了我们弟兄以扫子孙所住的西珥，从亚拉巴的路，经过以拉他、以旬迦别，转向摩押旷野的路去。

摩西就照耶和华所吩咐的行。三人当着会众的眼前上了何珥山。

以东王说：“你不可从我的地经过，免得我带刀出去攻击你。”以色列人说：“我们要走大道上去；我们和牲畜若喝你的水，必给你价值。不求别的，只求你容我们步行过去。”以东王说：“你们不可经过！”就率领许多人出来，要用强硬的手攻击以色列人。这样，以东王不肯容以色列人从他的境界过去。于是他们转去，离开他。以色列全会众从加低斯起行，到了何珥山。耶和华在附近以东边界的何珥山上晓谕摩西、亚伦说：

免得有人被诸般患难摇动。因为你们自己知道，我们受患难原是命定的。我们在你们那里的时候，预先告诉你们，我们必受患难，以后果然应验了，你们也知道。

坚固门徒的心，劝他们恒守所信的道；又说：“我们进入神的国，必须经历许多艰难。”

至于你们，要转回，从红海的路往旷野去。’
