摩西这样告诉以色列人，只是他们因为心里愁烦和苦工的缘故，就不肯听摩西的话。

以色列人从何珥山起行，在撒摩拿安营。

你们为什么使以色列人灰心，不过河到耶和华赐给他们的地那里去呢？

他们上到以实各谷，看了那地，就使以色列人灰心，不进耶和华赐给他们的地那里去。

现在亚玛力人和迦南人住在山谷中，明天你们要回转，从到红海路上，起行到旷野去。”

不要与他们争执；他们的地，连脚掌那么大的一块，我都不给你们，因为我已经把西珥山赐给以扫作产业。你们要用银子向他们买食物吃；也要用银子向他们买水喝。因为耶和华你的神，对于你手里所作的一切事，都已经赐福给你；他也知道你怎样走这大旷野；这四十年来，耶和华你们的神常与你同在，使你毫无缺乏。”’“于是我们离开我们住在西珥的兄弟以扫的子孙，继续前行；沿着亚拉巴的路，到了以拉他和以旬．迦别，然后转向摩押旷野的路去。

摩西就照着耶和华吩咐的行了，三人当着全体会众的眼前上了何珥山。

以东王对使者说：“你不可从我这里经过，免得我带着刀出来攻击你。”以色列人对他说：“我们要走大路上去，我们和牲畜若是喝了你的水，我必照价付你；不求别的事，只求你容我们步行经过。”以东王说：“你不可经过。”他就率领很多人出来，要用强硬的手攻击以色列人。这样，以东王不肯让以色列人从他的境内经过，以色列人就离开他去了。以色列全体会众从加低斯起行，到了何珥山。耶和华在以东地边界的何珥山对摩西和亚伦说：

免得有人在各样的患难中动摇了。你们自己知道，我们受患难原是命定的。我们在你们那里的时候，早已对你们说过，我们将会遭受患难。后来应验了，这是你们知道的。

坚固门徒的心，劝他们恒守所信的道，又说：“我们进入神的国，必须经历许多苦难。”

至于你们，你们要转回，经往红海的路，起程到旷野里去。’
