百姓便跟摩西吵鬧，要他給他們水喝。摩西便對他們說：「你們為什麼跟我吵鬧？為什麼試探耶和華？」

摩西的話剛說完，這些人腳下的地就裂開，吞下了他們和他們的家眷及所有可拉一夥的人和財物。他們和屬於他們的一切就這樣活活地墜入陰間，地在他們上面合攏起來，他們就從會眾中滅亡了。他們四圍的以色列人聽到他們的喊叫聲，紛紛逃跑，生怕自己也被吞下去。耶和華又降下烈火，燒死了那二百五十個獻香的人。

當晚，全體會眾放聲大哭，整夜哀號。他們埋怨摩西和亞倫說：「我們還不如死在埃及或曠野！

除了在可拉事件中死亡的人以外，當天有一萬四千七百人死於瘟疫。

民眾因為困難而發怨言，傳到耶和華耳中。耶和華聽見後便向他們發怒，使火在他們中間燃燒，燒毀了營地的邊緣部分。

摩西派去打探迦南的人回來以後危言聳聽，以致會眾向摩西發怨言。打探的人因而染上瘟疫，死在耶和華面前，

他們口中的肉還沒嚼爛，耶和華的怒氣就已向他們發作，降下了大災。因此，那地方叫基博羅·哈他瓦，因為那些貪食者埋葬在那裡。

以色列全體會眾在曠野向摩西和亞倫發怨言說：「我們還不如當初在埃及就死在耶和華手中。在那裡，我們至少可以圍在肉鍋旁吃個飽。現在，你把我們帶到曠野來，是要叫全體會眾餓死在這裡嗎？」

因為那夜沒有關閉我母胎的門，以致讓我看見患難。「為何我不出生時就夭折，出母胎時就斷氣？

死於刀下的勝過死於饑餓的，後者因田間缺糧而活活餓死。
