百姓便跟摩西吵闹，要他给他们水喝。摩西便对他们说：“你们为什么跟我吵闹？为什么试探耶和华？”

摩西的话刚说完，这些人脚下的地就裂开，吞下了他们和他们的家眷及所有可拉一伙的人和财物。他们和属于他们的一切就这样活活地坠入阴间，地在他们上面合拢起来，他们就从会众中灭亡了。他们四围的以色列人听到他们的喊叫声，纷纷逃跑，生怕自己也被吞下去。耶和华又降下烈火，烧死了那二百五十个献香的人。

当晚，全体会众放声大哭，整夜哀号。他们埋怨摩西和亚伦说：“我们还不如死在埃及或旷野！

除了在可拉事件中死亡的人以外，当天有一万四千七百人死于瘟疫。

民众因为困难而发怨言，传到耶和华耳中。耶和华听见后便向他们发怒，使火在他们中间燃烧，烧毁了营地的边缘部分。

摩西派去打探迦南的人回来以后危言耸听，以致会众向摩西发怨言。打探的人因而染上瘟疫，死在耶和华面前，

他们口中的肉还没嚼烂，耶和华的怒气就已向他们发作，降下了大灾。因此，那地方叫基博罗·哈他瓦，因为那些贪食者埋葬在那里。

以色列全体会众在旷野向摩西和亚伦发怨言说：“我们还不如当初在埃及就死在耶和华手中。在那里，我们至少可以围在肉锅旁吃个饱。现在，你把我们带到旷野来，是要叫全体会众饿死在这里吗？”

因为那夜没有关闭我母胎的门，以致让我看见患难。“为何我不出生时就夭折，出母胎时就断气？

死于刀下的胜过死于饥饿的，后者因田间缺粮而活活饿死。
