But he said,“ You may not pass through.” Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful force.

曰爾毋過焉、以東王率其羣眾、大力以禦之、

曰、爾毋得過我疆宇。以東王率其全軍、大力以禦之、

以東王曰、爾決不得過、以東王帥軍眾多、大振威勢、出而欲攻以色列人、

Again they answered:“ You may not pass through.” Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army.

Again the people of Edom answered,“ We won’t let you pass through here.” Then the people of Edom marched out against them. They came with a large and powerful army.

But he said,“ You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force.

But the king of Edom replied,“ Stay out! You may not pass through our land.” With that he mobilized his army and marched out against them with an imposing force.

Yet Edom insisted,“ You may not travel through.” And they came out to confront them with a large force of heavily-armed people.

But he said,“ You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against him with a heavy force and a strong hand.

Then he said,“ You shall not pass through.” So Edom came out against them with many men and with a strong hand.

And he said, Thou shalt not pass through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.

Yet Edom insisted,“ You must not travel through.” And they came out to confront them with a large force of heavily-armed people.

And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.

He said,“ You shall not pass through.” Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand.

Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying,“ Please allow us to pass through your land.” But the king of Edom rejected the request. Israel sent the same request to the king of Moab, but he was unwilling to cooperate. So Israel stayed at Kadesh.

This is what the LORD says:“ Because Edom has committed three crimes– make that four!– I will not revoke my decree of judgment. He chased his brother with a sword; he wiped out his allies. In his anger he tore them apart without stopping to rest; in his fury he relentlessly attacked them.

But Edom said to him,“ You will not pass through me, or I will come out against you with the sword.”

But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory. He assembled his whole army, camped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel.

So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing his father had given to his brother. Esau said privately,“ The time of mourning for my father is near; then I will kill my brother Jacob!”

“ Because you violently slaughtered your relatives, the people of Jacob, shame will cover you, and you will be destroyed forever.You stood aloof while strangers took his army captive, and foreigners advanced to his gates. When they cast lots over Jerusalem, you behaved as though you were in league with them.You should not have gloated when your relatives suffered calamity. You should not have rejoiced over the people of Judah when they were destroyed. You should not have boasted when they suffered adversity.You should not have entered the city of my people when they experienced distress. You should not have joined in gloating over their misfortune when they suffered distress. You should not have looted their wealth when they endured distress.You should not have stood at the fork in the road to slaughter those trying to escape. You should not have captured their refugees when they suffered adversity.“ For the day of the LORD is approaching for all the nations! Just as you have done, so it will be done to you. You will get exactly what your deeds deserve.

“‘ You have shown unrelenting hostility and poured the people of Israel onto the blades of a sword at the time of their calamity, at the time of their final punishment.Therefore, as surely as I live, declares the sovereign LORD, I will subject you to bloodshed, and bloodshed will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you.I will turn Mount Seir into a desolate ruin; I will cut off from it the one who passes through or returns.I will fill its mountains with its dead; on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines, those killed by the sword will fall.I will turn you into a perpetual desolation, and your cities will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the LORD.“‘ You said,“ These two nations, these two lands will be mine, and we will possess them,”– although the LORD was there–therefore, as surely as I live, declares the sovereign LORD, I will deal with you according to your anger, and according to your envy, by which you acted spitefully against them. I will reveal myself to them when I judge you.

I am committed to peace, but when I speak, they want to make war.

The messengers returned to Jacob and said,“ We went to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you and has four hundred men with him.”
