And he said, Thou shalt not go through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.

曰爾毋過焉、以東王率其羣眾、大力以禦之、

曰、爾毋得過我疆宇。以東王率其全軍、大力以禦之、

以東王曰、爾決不得過、以東王帥軍眾多、大振威勢、出而欲攻以色列人、

Again they answered:“ You may not pass through.” Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army.

Again the people of Edom answered,“ We won’t let you pass through here.” Then the people of Edom marched out against them. They came with a large and powerful army.

But he said,“ You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against them with a large army and with a strong force.

But the king of Edom replied,“ Stay out! You may not pass through our land.” With that he mobilized his army and marched out against them with an imposing force.

Yet Edom insisted,“ You may not travel through.” And they came out to confront them with a large force of heavily-armed people.

But he said,“ You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against him with a heavy force and a strong hand.

Then he said,“ You shall not pass through.” So Edom came out against them with many men and with a strong hand.

And he said, Thou shalt not pass through. And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.

Yet Edom insisted,“ You must not travel through.” And they came out to confront them with a large force of heavily-armed people.

Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken[ thereto]. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not[ consent]: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away[ the punishment] thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:

And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword.

But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.

For[ thy] violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou[ wast] as one of them.But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid[ hands] on their substance in the day of their calamity;Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.For the day of the LORD[ is] near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.

Because thou hast had a perpetual hatred, and hast shed[ the blood of] the children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity, in the time[ that their] iniquity[ had] an end:Therefore,[ as] I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee: sith thou hast not hated blood, even blood shall pursue thee.Thus will I make mount Seir most desolate, and cut off from it him that passeth out and him that returneth.And I will fill his mountains with his slain[ men]: in thy hills, and in thy valleys, and in all thy rivers, shall they fall that are slain with the sword.I will make thee perpetual desolations, and thy cities shall not return: and ye shall know that I[ am] the LORD.Because thou hast said, These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess it; whereas the LORD was there:Therefore,[ as] I live, saith the Lord GOD, I will even do according to thine anger, and according to thine envy which thou hast used out of thy hatred against them; and I will make myself known among them, when I have judged thee.

I[ am for] peace: but when I speak, they[ are] for war.

And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
