“ Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes. Write the name of each man on his staff.

“ Speak to the Israelites. Get 12 walking sticks from them. Get one from the leader of each of Israel’s tribes. Write the name of each man on his walking stick.

“ Speak to the people of Israel, and get from them staffs, one for each fathers’ house, from all their chiefs according to their fathers’ houses, twelve staffs. Write each man’s name on his staff,

“ Tell the people of Israel to bring you twelve wooden staffs, one from each leader of Israel’s ancestral tribes, and inscribe each leader’s name on his staff.

“ Speak to the Israelites and take one staff from them for each ancestral tribe, twelve staffs from all the leaders of their tribes. Write each man’s name on his staff.

“ Speak to the children of Israel, and get from them a rod from each father’s house, all their leaders according to their fathers’ houses— twelve rods. Write each man’s name on his rod.

And fire has gone out from its stem; It has consumed its shoots and fruit, So that there is no strong stem in it, A scepter to rule.’ ” This is a song of mourning, and has become a song of mourning.

The flag of the camp of the sons of Judah, by their armies, set out first, with Nahshon the son of Amminadab, over its army,and Nethanel the son of Zuar, over the tribal army of the sons of Issachar;and Eliab the son of Helon over the tribal army of the sons of Zebulun.Then the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who were carrying the tabernacle, set out.Next the flag of the camp of Reuben, by their armies, set out with Elizur the son of Shedeur, over its army,and Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai over the tribal army of the sons of Simeon,and Eliasaph the son of Deuel was over the tribal army of the sons of Gad.Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy objects; and the tabernacle was set up before their arrival.Next the flag of the camp of the sons of Ephraim, by their armies, set out, with Elishama the son of Ammihud over its army,and Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur over the tribal army of the sons of Manasseh;and Abidan the son of Gideoni over the tribal army of the sons of Benjamin.Then the flag of the camp of the sons of Dan, by their armies, which formed the rear guard for all the camps, set out, with Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai over its army,and Pagiel the son of Ochran over the tribal army of the sons of Asher;and Ahira the son of Enan over the tribal army of the sons of Naphtali.

Shepherd Your people with Your scepter, The flock of Your possession Which lives by itself in the woodland, In the midst of a fruitful field. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead As in the days of old.

For there is a testing; and what if even the rod which despises will cease to be?” declares the Lord God.

And you shall take in your hand this staff, with which you shall perform the signs.”

These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of the tribe of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;of the tribe of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;of the tribe of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.These are the men who were called from the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ tribes; they were the heads of divisions of Israel.”

The Lord said to him,“ What is that in your hand?” And he said,“ A staff.”

For the scepter of wickedness will not rest upon the land of the righteous, So that the righteous will not extend their hands to do wrong.

The Lord will stretch out Your strong scepter from Zion, saying,“ Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”

Sharpened to make a slaughter, Polished to flash like lightning!’ Or shall we rejoice, the rod of My son despising every tree?

Now those who camp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be of the flag of the camp of Judah, by their armies; and the leader of the sons of Judah: Nahshon the son of Amminadab,and his army, their numbered men: 74,600.Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Issachar; and the leader of the sons of Issachar: Nethanel the son of Zuar,and his army, their numbered men: 54,400.Then follows the tribe of Zebulun; and the leader of the sons of Zebulun: Eliab the son of Helon,and his army, his numbered men: 57,400.The total of the numbered men of the camp of Judah: 186,400, by their armies. They shall set out first.“ On the south side shall be the flag of the camp of Reuben by their armies; and the leader of the sons of Reuben: Elizur the son of Shedeur,and his army, their numbered men: 46,500.And those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Simeon; and the leader of the sons of Simeon: Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai,and his army, their numbered men: 59,300.Then follows the tribe of Gad; and the leader of the sons of Gad: Eliasaph the son of Deuel,and his army, their numbered men: 45,650.The total of the numbered men of the camp of Reuben: 151,450 by their armies. And they shall set out second.“ Then the tent of meeting shall set out with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps; just as they camp, so they shall set out, every man in his place by their flags.“ On the west side shall be the flag of the camp of Ephraim by their armies; and the leader of the sons of Ephraim: Elishama the son of Ammihud,and his army, their numbered men: 40,500.Next to him shall be the tribe of Manasseh; and the leader of the sons of Manasseh: Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur,and his army, their numbered men, 32,200.Then follows the tribe of Benjamin; and the leader of the sons of Benjamin: Abidan the son of Gideoni,and his army, their numbered men, 35,400.The total of the numbered men of the camp of Ephraim: 108,100, by their armies. And they shall set out third.“ On the north side shall be the flag of the camp of Dan by their armies; and the leader of the sons of Dan: Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai,and his army, their numbered men: 62,700.Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Asher; and the leader of the sons of Asher: Pagiel the son of Ochran,and his army, their numbered men: 41,500.Then follows the tribe of Naphtali; and the leader of the sons of Naphtali: Ahira the son of Enan,and his army, their numbered men: 53,400.

“ Now you, son of man, take for yourself one stick and write on it,‘ For Judah and for the sons of Israel, his companions’; then take another stick and write on it,‘ For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim and all the house of Israel, his companions.’Then put them together for yourself one to another into one stick, so that they may become one in your hand.And when the sons of your people speak to you, saying,‘ Will you not declare to us what you mean by these?’say to them,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Behold, I am going to take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel, his companions; and I will put them with it, with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they will be one in My hand.” ’The sticks on which you write will be in your hand before their eyes.

The scepter will not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
