I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they.”

Now consider and see what answer I should take back to Him who sent me.”And David said to Gad,“ I am in great distress. Please let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man.”So the Lord sent a plague upon Israel from the morning till the appointed time. From Dan to Beersheba seventy thousand men of the people died.

Again the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel, and He moved David against them to say,“ Go, number Israel and Judah.”

So Moses said to Aaron,“ Take a censer and put fire in it from the altar, put incense on it, and take it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from the Lord. The plague has begun.”Then Aaron took it as Moses commanded, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and already the plague had begun among the people. So he put in the incense and made atonement for the people.And he stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped.Now those who died in the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died in the Korah incident.

And those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

So they said,“ The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go three days’ journey into the desert and sacrifice to the Lord our God, lest He fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.”
