『你去告訴大衛說：「永恆主這麼說：我提出三樣災要降於你，隨你選擇一樣，我好向你施行。」』於是迦得來見大衛，通知他，問他說：『你願意你這地有三年饑荒呢？還是你在敵人面前逃跑、而他追趕着你三個月呢？抑或在你這地有三天的瘟疫呢？現在你要思想、要看清楚我該用甚麼話去回覆那差遣我的。』大衛對迦得說：『我非常為難；讓我們落在永恆主手裏吧，因為他有豐盛的憐憫；可別讓我落在人手裏呀。』於是大衛選擇了瘟疫。那些日子正是收割麥子的日子。永恆主把瘟疫降在以色列中；從早晨到所定的時候，從但直到別是巴、民間死了七萬人。

永恆主又向以色列人發怒，就激動了大衛來害他們，說：『去統計統計以色列人和猶大人吧。』

摩西對亞倫說：『拿那香爐，把祭壇上取的火盛在那裏頭，又放上香，趕快走到會眾那裏，為他們行除罪禮，因為有神的震怒從永恆主面前發出，疫病已經發作了。』亞倫照摩西所說的拿來，跑到大眾中，哎呀，疫病已經在民間發作了；他就加上香，為人民行除罪禮。他站在死人與活人之間，疫症就被制住了。除了因可拉的事而死的以外，患疫症而死的、有一萬四千七百人。

那時因疫症而死的、有二萬四千人。

他們說：『希伯來人的上帝碰見了我們；求你容我們走三天的路程到曠野，去獻祭給永恆主我們的上帝，免得他用瘟疫或刀兵襲擊我們。』
