「你去告訴大衛，說耶和華如此說：『我有三樣災，隨你選擇一樣，我好降與你。』」於是迦得來見大衛，對他說：「你願意國中有七年的饑荒呢？是在你敵人面前逃跑，被追趕三個月呢？是在你國中有三日的瘟疫呢？現在你要揣摩思想，我好回覆那差我來的。」大衛對迦得說：「我甚為難！我願落在耶和華的手裏，因為他有豐盛的憐憫。我不願落在人的手裏。」於是，耶和華降瘟疫與以色列人，自早晨到所定的時候；從但直到別是巴，民間死了七萬人。

耶和華又向以色列人發怒，就激動大衛，使他吩咐人去數點以色列人和猶大人。

摩西對亞倫說：「拿你的香爐，把壇上的火盛在其中，又加上香，快快帶到會眾那裏，為他們贖罪；因為有忿怒從耶和華那裏出來，瘟疫已經發作了。」亞倫照着摩西所說的拿來，跑到會中，不料，瘟疫在百姓中已經發作了。他就加上香，為百姓贖罪。他站在活人死人中間，瘟疫就止住了。除了因可拉事情死的以外，遭瘟疫死的，共有一萬四千七百人。

那時遭瘟疫死的，有二萬四千人。

他們說：「希伯來人的神遇見了我們。求你容我們往曠野去，走三天的路程，祭祀耶和華－我們的神，免得他用瘟疫、刀兵攻擊我們。」
