“你去告诉大卫说：‘耶和华这样说：我给你三个选择，你要选择一个，我好向你施行。’”于是迦得来见大卫，问他说：“你要国中三年（按照《马索拉文本》，“三年”作“七年”；现参照《七十士译本》翻译；参代上21:12）的饥荒呢？或是要在你敌人面前逃跑，被追赶三个月呢？或是要国中有三天的瘟疫呢？现在你要想想，决定我该用什么话回覆那差我来的。”大卫对迦得说：“我非常为难，我们情愿落在耶和华的手里，因为他有丰盛的怜悯。不要让我落在人的手里。”于是耶和华降瘟疫在以色列地，从早晨直到所定的时间；从但到别是巴，众民中死了七万人。

耶和华又向以色列人发怒，就激动大卫，使他们受害，说：“你去数点一下以色列和犹大的人数吧！”

摩西对亚伦说：“你要拿着香炉，把坛上的火盛在里头，又加上香，快快带到会众那里去，为他们赎罪，因为有震怒从耶和华面前出来，瘟疫已经开始了。”亚伦照着摩西吩咐的把香炉拿来，跑到会众中间，果然，瘟疫已经在人民中间开始了；他就加上香，为人民赎罪。他站在死人与活人中间，瘟疫就止住了。除了因可拉事件死亡的以外，因瘟疫死亡的有一万四千七百人。

那时因瘟疫而死的，共有二万四千人。

他们说：“希伯来人的神遇见了我们；求你让我们走三天的路程到旷野去，献祭给耶和华我们的神，免得他用瘟疫或刀剑击杀我们。”
