「你去告訴大衛，耶和華說，『我有三樣災禍，你可以選擇讓我降哪一樣給你。』」迦得就來見大衛，對他說：「你願意國內有七年饑荒呢？還是被敵人追殺三個月呢？還是國內發生三天瘟疫呢？請你考慮好後告訴我，我好回覆那差我來的。」大衛說：「我實在為難！不過我寧願落在耶和華的手中，也不願落在人的手中，因為耶和華有無限的憐憫。」於是，那天早晨，耶和華在以色列降下瘟疫，瘟疫持續了三天，從但到別示巴共有七萬人死亡。

耶和華又向以色列人發怒，祂促使大衛來對付他們，讓大衛統計以色列和猶大的人口。

摩西對亞倫說：「取香爐來，裡面放些壇上的火，添上香，趕快帶到會眾那裡為他們贖罪，因為耶和華發怒了，瘟疫已經開始。」亞倫就照著摩西的吩咐取來香爐，跑到會眾當中。那時瘟疫已經在人群中蔓延起來。他就在爐中放上香為民眾贖罪。他站在活人和死人中間，瘟疫就止住了。除了在可拉事件中死亡的人以外，當天有一萬四千七百人死於瘟疫。

但已有兩萬四千人死於瘟疫。

摩西和亞倫說：「希伯來人的上帝向我們顯現了。求你容我們走三天的路程，到曠野去向我們的上帝耶和華獻祭，請你讓我們去吧，免得祂用刀劍、瘟疫來攻擊我們。」
