耶和华又向以色列人发怒，祂促使大卫来对付他们，让大卫统计以色列和犹大的人口。

摩西对亚伦说：“取香炉来，里面放些坛上的火，添上香，赶快带到会众那里为他们赎罪，因为耶和华发怒了，瘟疫已经开始。”亚伦就照着摩西的吩咐取来香炉，跑到会众当中。那时瘟疫已经在人群中蔓延起来。他就在炉中放上香为民众赎罪。他站在活人和死人中间，瘟疫就止住了。除了在可拉事件中死亡的人以外，当天有一万四千七百人死于瘟疫。

但已有两万四千人死于瘟疫。

摩西和亚伦说：“希伯来人的上帝向我们显现了。求你容我们走三天的路程，到旷野去向我们的上帝耶和华献祭，请你让我们去吧，免得祂用刀剑、瘟疫来攻击我们。”
