是上帝坐在大地的圓穹之上，地上的居民就像蚱蜢；他搭開諸天如帷幕，鋪張天空如可住的帳棚。

先前有以米人住在那裏，這族之民又大、又多、又高，像亞衲人一樣。

他們取道南地上去，來到希伯崙；在那裏有亞衲人的後代亞希幔、示篩、撻買。（這希伯崙之建造比埃及的鎖安還早七年。）

從非利士營中出來了一個挑戰的人、名叫歌利亞，是迦特人，身高六肘零一虎口。他頭戴銅盔，身穿鎧甲；那甲的銅重五千舍客勒。他腿上有銅護膝，他兩肩之中背着銅短槍。他的矛杆如同織布的機軸，他矛頭的鐵重六百舍客勒；有一個拿大盾牌的人在他前面走。

在迦特又有戰事；那裏有一個身量高大的人，他的手指和腳趾都是六支六支的，總數是二十四支；他也是高身漢所生的。這人向以色列人罵陣，大衛的哥哥示米亞的兒子約拿單擊殺了他。這四個人是在迦特的高身漢所生的；是在大衛手下或大衛僕人手下倒斃的。

他又擊殺了一個埃及人、一個身量五肘的人。這埃及人手裏拿着矛；像織布者的機軸；比拿雅只拿着棍子下去，竟從埃及人手裏將矛奪過來，又用他的矛將他殺死。

那非利士人直望着；他見了大衛，就藐視他，因為他年輕，臉色赤紅，容貌美麗。
