非利士营中有个名叫歌利亚的巨人出来讨战。他来自迦特，身高三米，头戴铜盔，身穿重达五十七公斤的铠甲，腿上有铜护膝，肩背铜戟。戟柄粗如织布机的轴，铁戟头重七公斤。有卫士拿着他的盾牌走在前面。

在迦特的一次交战中，有一个非利士巨人每只手脚各有六个手指和脚趾，共二十四个手指和脚趾。他向以色列人骂阵，大卫的哥哥示米亚的儿子约拿单就杀了他。这四个迦特巨人的后裔都死在大卫和他的部下手里。

还曾杀死一个两米多高的埃及巨人。当时埃及人拿着织布机轴般粗的长矛，比拿雅只拿着棍子迎战，他夺了对方的长矛，用那矛刺死了对方。

歌利亚见大卫是个面色红润、相貌英俊的少年，就藐视他。
