我以迦南錫以色列族、可於支派中、各擇一長者、至其地以窺察焉。

爾當遣人往窺探我所賜以色列人之迦南地、每一支派當遣一人、各於本支派中為族長者、

“ Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders.”

“ Send some men to check out the land of Canaan. I am giving it to the Israelites. Send one leader from each of Israel’s tribes.”

“ Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a chief among them.”

昔在迦鐵巴尼亞、我遣爾祖窺察斯土、至以實各谷、既見其地、則使以色列族喪膽、皆不欲往、詣耶和華所賜之地、今爾所行亦若是。

爾曹來前、告我曰、我將遣使、往探其地、返可復我、當由何道、當至何邑。我善其言、簡於各支派中、共十有二人、彼即旋踵登山、至以實各谷、窺察其地、取其土產、以復於我、曰、我上帝耶和華所賜者、膏腴之壤也。

及各支派之牧伯、

於以色列族中、簡才能出眾者、立為民長、即千夫長、百夫長、五十夫長、十夫長、

我遂於支派諸長中、簡智慧之人、眾所識者、立為牧伯、千夫長、百夫長、五十夫長、十夫長、治理爾曹、

嫩之子約書亞由失亭私遣二偵、曰、爾往哉、窺察斯土、及耶利歌。二偵遂往、入妓室而宿焉、妓名喇合。或告耶利歌王曰、今日薄暮、以色列族人至此、窺察我地。耶利歌王遣人、謂喇合曰、有人至此、窺察我地、已入爾室、爾攜之來。喇合既匿二人、則曰、有人至我、不知何自、迨暝、閉邑門時、二人已出、不知何往、速追可及。蓋喇合引二人至屋上、有胡麻梗臚陳於彼、即藏其中。耶利歌人追至約但津、既出、邑門旋閉。未寢、喇合升屋、謂其人曰、耶和華曾以此地錫爾、我所素知、斯土之人懼爾、甚至喪膽、爾出埃及時、耶和華使紅海水涸、約但東亞摩哩王西宏及噩、為爾殲滅、我所風聞。我聞之喪膽、毫無銳氣、不敢敵爾、蓋爾上帝耶和華、乃天上地下之上帝、我今待爾以仁慈、請爾指耶和華而誓、亦以仁慈待我全家、示我以真實之印誌。我父母、兄弟、姊妹、及凡所有、爾必保其生存、免於死亡。二人曰、我之所為當秘勿宣、則我以己命代爾、迨耶和華以斯土予我、我必待爾以仁慈、真實無妄。喇合居室、附於邑垣、故以索縋二人、由牖而下、謂之曰、當遁於山、自匿三日、恐追者及爾、待追者反、然後前往。二人曰、爾既用絳索以縋我、必以此索、仍繫於牖、集爾父母兄弟戚屬、至於斯室、厥後我儕至斯土、則爾使我所發之誓、我必恪守。

每支派中、擇最著者一人、以助爾。

耶和華諭摩西曰、屬以色列族之耆老、於其中簡七十人、必爾夙知其為民之長老族長、攜至會幕前、與爾偕立。
